From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Move over, Fancy Nancy—there's a new glamour queen in town! Mary's number one goal for her new year at school is to look absolutely fabulous. Covered in accessories, including her bedroom curtain, Mary struts down the block, attracting the attention of townsfolk and resident pooches. Arriving at Mother Goose Elementary, Mary is shocked to see her teacher and classmates dressed in bland clothing from eras long past. Swooping in to save the day, she offers fashion suggestions to all of the students and teachers. Even Clark, the classroom pet snake, gets accessorized with a monocle and top hat. The newly fashion-forward educators and kids incorporate style into school traditions such as storytime, art class, and music class. However, when recess arrives, the students are in a panic. Looking to Mary, they exclaim, "We're clearly dressed all wrong for this!" Mary thinks fast, tosses her silk-lined cape, and jumps right into play, with her classmates following quickly behind. Brantley-Newton's bright and busy illustrations full of racially diverse children and adults appeal to the eye without distracting from the text, while Sauer's quick and witty rhyme will keep children engaged and on their toes. VERDICT This fun and lively read-aloud with an African American protagonist is suitable for any children's collection.—Marian Mays, Washington Talking Book & Braille Library

Review

*“Pinkalicious + Fancy Nancy + Eloise = Mary, the diminutive, precocious, brown-skinned queen of glam. The day Mary starts school, she declares to her mom, "I must accessorize." And she does. With bows, buttons, scarves, and even a sheep-shaped purse with an attitude, Mary turns heads all over town. Her drab-looking (though racially diverse) classmates at Mother Goose Elementary (Little Boy Blue, Georgie Porgie, and Little Bo Peep as well as the unnamed others) certainly appear to have stepped out of eras long gone by. The brown-skinned teacher, complete with a bun atop her crown, also appears to be a relic. Mary soon changes their glamless lives with beads, feather boas, sporty hats, and festive patterns aplenty. Mary's makeover magic leaves no school subject or space unturned. When recess arrives, a crisis ensues, for the kids are dressed all wrong for romping. Undaunted, Mary knows exactly what to do. Sauer's rhythm never falters, and Brantley-Newton's bright, fun-filled illustrations teem with energy and life and will keep young readers guessing: who or what will Mary accessorize next, and how? The array of skin tones will help all readers see themselves in this book in which imagination and creativity reign supreme. Whether by happenstance or by design, this delightful picture book positively answers the call for more books about children of color that aren't about civil rights or slavery. Welcome, Mary! We hope to see you again.” —Kirkus Reviews (STARRED REVIEW) “. . . a gleeful story starring a young black fashionista . . . . Tammi Sauer's (Chicken Dance; Cowboy Camp) wordplay is as spirited as the story . . .  Illustrator Vanessa Brantley-Newton . . . captures the giddy makeover mayhem in the dramatic expressions of her characters and in her wonderful, freewheeling use of collaged fabrics and vintage papers. . . . [an] exuberant picture-book ode to the fun of fashion.” —Shelf Awareness “Move over, Fancy Nancy—there’s a new glamour queen in town! Come on!! I'm the illustrator, but this book is so beautifully written by Ms. Tammi Sauer! It's fun and moves along so beautifully!I also adore that it's a little African American girl that comes to save the day! So very empowering on so many levels. Tammi Saueris an american treasure. She has done a ton of amazing books and I think she will be doing it for years to come!GO TAMMI! GO MARY!!

This is a wonderful picture book! It is cleverly written in a rhyming format that is pleasing to the ear. The vibrantly colored, detailed illustrations complete the story and bring it to perfection. The main character, Mary is button cute! The message told through the age-appropriate activities of the Mother Goose characters - who, by the way are diverse - is one that every child should hear: it's okay to glam it up and it's okay to tone it down when the occasion calls for it.

This is a modern take on Mary Had a Little Lamb. Its catchy and incorporates school and fashion. It reminds me a little bit like Fancy Nancy with the way it incorporates new vocabulary. The illustrations are absolutely lovely and I love that not only is Mary POC with natural hair, but that her classroom is very diverse. I would recommend this. Bought it for a child who was 4 at the time and have been gifting to other children ever since.

Mary is a super cute little girl. She helps make her classmates lives a little more glamorous. Don't be fool though, this little girl know that sometimes you have to ditch the glam and get muddy!

This book is one of my favs for my little girl!! It has some elaborate words for her little 1 yo self, but it keeps her attention. I love the message it teaches at the end by little Glamorous Mary. I ordered this book for 2 other little girls, as well. Oh, and the illustrations are amazing! Very detailed!!

Great for a my "Royal Princess" all girls sleepover. Good quality book, easy reading, exciting story-line and beautiful illustrations. My girls loved dressing up like "Mary" in the book. Well worth the purchase price!

I bought this for my granddaughter, because I'm the glammy grandmother. I love this book! It is about being who you are, and it's hilarious!

Adorable book with tons of style and imagination. It was fun to read along with my Kindergarten.

Having a hard time getting through it because of the cutesy, tabloid-like lingo author uses. Every other sentence is a punny alliteration. It has some decent info, but it's written like a Seventeen Magazine. Some literary devices peppered in here or there would be just fine, but it's just about every single sentence.

Okay, so to be fair, this is a manual and if you need a manual, it's great. It's not really meant for a one sitting read-through. In this respect, the prose is easy to read, the digital text organized with helpful in-text links, and it's pretty short and sweet. A doctor could probably tell you everything in this book, but there may be things you wouldn't think to bring up that'll help you prepare better than you would otherwise. That said, if, like me, you were thinking, "Maybe I'm just not sure about getting pregnant because I need to educate myself!" and plan to read it in one sitting, don't get this book. Being a manual, this guidebook will cover all the good things, but also ALL THE HORRIBLE THINGS THAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG, and in one sitting it's exhausting and nerve-wrecking. If you're in 100%, you might feel assured having all these helpful checklists and reminders and vocabulary lists, but, if not, you might end up feeling even less ready and a bit unnerved.

The book had tons of good information in it, but it was overwhelmed with the author's constant remarks and attempts at joking. I understand it's done to relate to the consumer, but when it's literally in every other sentence, it's a bit much. If she toned it done a bit, I would've enjoyed it more.

I thought I was educated, but I learned so much from this book. I found this book while looking for What to Expect Your Child's First Year, which I wanted to read because I work with infants and its always nice to get more information from different places. when books are in a series, I like to read all of them, so I started with this one and will continue through the child's second year book. I didn't know what to expect from this book starting out, but I am glad I read it. I have no children and was interested in what women go through when they are pregnant, I never even thought about the before pregnancy process. The parts about hormonal changes and how to recognize them in your own body set of a light bulb above my head. I read sections out of order and reread some, Overall I really enjoyed this book. It also served as an introduction and I took some of the topics and conducted further research.

LOVE this book. It touches on everything!! One of my favorite things about it is that you don't have to start reading from page one. You can look at the table of contents and go straight to the chapters that you're interested in at that time. I have read this entire book several times, just not directly from one cover to the next. I should point out that I read the original edition. I have only begun reading this updated version that I love so far just as much.

Definitely some great information, but it is a little repetitive. I like the boxes aimed at future fathers, but I feel like the entire book should have an audience of future parents, not just future moms. I would like my husband to get all of the information, not just the boxes.

Most of the was "well, obviously" type of stuff. It often read as condescending. And the formatting is so distracting.

Informational and concise but wish it wasn’t so redundant/ repeating so much content across the book. It was a struggle to get through, wish there was more citations/ interpretation but I did read through it all, just to be sure I didn’t miss the key points. I’m sure whoever is a first time TTC candidate can skip a major portion of this book (though if necessary, could be good starting resource if there are fertility issues to explore / options).

Review

“[An] aesthetically charged and deeply researched account . . . a wild rainstorm of a book, pelting the reader with ideas and inspiration.”—Nature   “A gorgeous and illuminating illustrated study of weather in all its tempestuous variety . . . [Lauren] Redniss’s combo of fact, folklore, and vibrant etched copperplate prints enthralls.”—O: The Oprah Magazine   “Eerily beautiful . . . If weather is our favorite default conversational subject, [Redniss] takes anything but a default approach. Thunder & Lightning contains plenty of scientific explanation (including more than a few nods toward global warming), but also far-flung personal stories that illuminate the beauty, wonder and chaos inherent in the elements.”—The New York Times   “Magical . . . Redniss has . . . shown us how human beings live with nature—fighting, coexisting, taming, predicting via leech barometer and radar and intuition. . . . She is, to use a contemporary word, a curator: arranging information with a distinct aesthetic and a point of view.”—The New York Times Book Review   “[A] twenty-first-century genius . . . Lauren Redniss is inventing a new literary genre. The artist brings her intrepid reporting and sharp intelligence to subjects as wide-ranging as Marie Curie, gay soldiers in WWII, and now stormy weather. . . . [Redniss is] a reporter, a painter, a social historian, a biographer, and a feminist who creates stories and tableaux that are published as books, which are at once sexual and prim, grotesque and romantic, scientific and soft. . . . The reader willing to put herself fully in Redniss’s hands will be rewarded with a delicious feeling of being enveloped by a phenomenon that eclipses the chiming trivialities of daily life.”—Elle   “From Superstorm Sandy to the California drought, weather is a constant presence in our lives, shaping the way we think, feel—and vote. Lauren Redniss’s latest, Thunder & Lightning: Weather Past, Present, Future, takes a deep dive into human efforts to grapple with the elements, with forays into mythology, commerce and politics. Combining etchings and text—the National Book Award–nominated author and artist designed her own font for the book—Thunder & Lightning lends a graphic-novel-like allure to some of nature’s most curious paradoxes.”—Vogue“Lauren Redniss is one of the most creative science writers of our time—her combination of beautiful artwork, reporting, and poetic prose brings science to life in ways that words alone simply cannot. Thunder & Lighting is a fascinating meditation on how climate affects the earth’s landscape and the lives inhabiting it, but also how the landscape of a book—the layout of its text, the images on its pages—impacts the telling of a story. This is an important book about a topic that couldn’t be more important to us all.”—Rebecca Skloot   “In Thunder & Lightning, Lauren Redniss combines her own dual punch of expressive art and impressive erudition to give an entirely new take on all that happens above our heads. This is an illuminated book that is also an illuminating one.”—Adam Gopnik   “Lauren Redniss’s Thunder & Lightning is such a strange and wonderful thing, the work of a first-class mind that refuses to submit to any categories or precedent. It’s the way you wish science would always be taught—with a mix of stories and facts, legend and hard science.”—Dave Eggers   “Beautiful and totally original.”—Elizabeth Kolbert

Love this book and I would recommend this to any teacher who wants to encourage reading, required reading for any high school student. Must read for everyone of any age who loves geography, science, history, biography. Love the illustrations, Thoughtful, interesting and I learned something new on almost every page. I wonder if her art work is available for sale in print form?

Interesting but something of a letdown given that it was very highly recommended. More of a impressionistic book and not a lot of science.

I had to buy this book for a class, and it was super interesting! The colors and drawings are captivating, and the stories are certainly interesting!

I got this book for book club. It looked like a children's book but the pictures and writing was obviously for an adult. The more i read it, the more I loved it. If you like surprises this is a good book for you.

Wow! Amazing illustrations. And bizarre stories. I bought if for my teenager, but I'm enjoying it myself.

Wow what a stunning book filled with great info. Buy this amazing book!

A present for someone I know who loves the weather, likes to study it, and so on. She absolutely LOVED this book - it was a big hit.

Great format. Fun and Informative. Serious science.
