Against World Literature: On the Politics of Untranslatability

Review

“Just following Emily Apter’s dizzying array of texts from diverse traditions and times (including a tightly argued discussion of the philosophicality of Simone de Beauvoir, lost in translation to the best of US feminists), embracing much experimental material, all read with meticulous care, is an education. No one has thought the question of world literature in greater depth, at once re-thinking Comparative Literature as translatability studies.”—Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak“Rarely does one read a book with the title Against that is so much for important causes and ideas: writing, translation, worldliness, diversity, cosmopolitanism, while fully aware of their promises and threats. In this moment of dispossession of the Humanities, we needed just that book to clarify matters and move beyond the contradictions.”

A brilliant and timely refutation of the reductive concept of "world literature".

Considering the prevalence and continuing attention and importance of the representation of Latin American literature in translation, it is a shame that Apter does not even make a passing reference to that "republic of letters," which played an immense role in Pascale Casanova's groundbreaking book. Ultimately, the problem, which abounds in comparatists, is that knowing one more language other than English is insufficient. Read Auerbach.

This should have just been a long essay.

This cookbook literally has something for everyone! As you can see by the photos I am including -- none of this looks (or tastes!) like "diet food". So forget that this book's says "keto" on the cover. It is simply a cookbook of easy, amazingly yummy food -- from a variety of regions -- created by a reliable recipe author. If you're not keto, just add a starch and/or use regular sugar and you'll be all set.For the physical cookbook, it is a sturdy paperback, with pages of a good nice thickness making them very easy to turn. The recipes are well laid-out, clear and easy to read. The super-helpful sidebar gives you both the macro details, as well as the recipe's relevant classifications: Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Pour and Cook, Soy-Free, Vegan, Vegetarian, 5 Ingredients or Less, Under 45 Minutes. (I'll include lists below of everything in each category.)Of the 75 total recipes, 36 of them (nearly half!) are flagged as "Under 45 Minutes". And the "Total Time" listed is actually the REAL total time, helpfully accounting for the time needed to both come-to-pressure and to release-pressure. So even if you're slow in the "prep" step like I am, you'll still be able to sit down and eat within an hour for nearly half of the recipes in this cookbook. Plus, her recipes have a proven track record (through both her previous cookbook and her blog) of being both simple and delicious. So far I've made 26 of the 75 recipes that are included in this cookbook!Poblano and Cheese Frittata (pg 24), Egg Loaf (pg 26), Cauliflower Mac and Cheese (pg 28), Mexican-Style Zucchini and Poblanos (pg 30), Green Beans with Bacon (pg 34), Palak Paneer (pg 38), Chicken Tortilla Soup (pg 56), Spicy and Creamy Chicken Soup (pg 60), Sesame-Ginger Chicken (pg 72), Savory Shrimp with Tomatoes and Feta (pg 74), Shortcut Dan Dan-Style Chicken (pg 78), Now and Later Butter Chicken (pg 82), Chicken Tikka Masala (pg 90), Spicy Basil-Beef Bowls (pg 104), Stroganoff (pg 107), 3-2-2-1 Texas Chili (pg 108), Pumpkin Pie Pudding (pg 134), Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake (pg 136), Thai Coconut Pandan Custard (pg 138), Dark Chocolate Cake (pg 142), Soft- and Hard-Boiled Eggs (pg 148), Garam Masala (pg 151), Shawarma Spice Mix (pg 152), Mustard Dressing (pg 155), Easy Asian Peanut Dressing (pg 156), and Creamy Cilantro-Jalapeno Dressing (pg 157).Every one of them has received nothing but yums from the people I've shared them with.Of everything I've been able to make so far, my Top Three dinner recipes are: 3-2-2-1 and the Now, Later Butter Chicken, and Savory Shrimp with Tomatoes and Feta. The Recipe Index included in the print version makes it super-easy to look up a recipe by name (assuming you remember the name), instead of trying to find it by visually searching through the table of contents. And the regular Index is exceptional -- allowing you to easily look up recipes for a specific ingredient, or by recipe "classification" -- such as Dairy-Free, and quickly and easily get a list of every recipe that meets that criteria. (I've included a list below of each of these criteria, and the recipes that meet them.)The table of contents for the print book is as follows:Chapter 1: Keto Made Easy* Keto Basics* * Macronutrients* * Setting the Right Macros for You* * Low-Carb Food Choices* Keto Myths* Instant Pot and Keto* Instant Pot 101* Cooking from Frozen* Essential Ingredients* Instant Pot Trouble Shooting* This Book's RecipesChapter 2: Eggs and Vegetables* Broccoli, Ham, and Pepper Frittata* On-the-Go Egg Cups* Poblano and Cheese Frittata* Egg Loaf* Cauliflower Mac and Cheese* Mexican-Style Zucchini and Poblanos* Baba Ganoush* Green Beans with Bacon* Quick Indian Creamy Eggplant* Palak Paneer* Creamy Poblano Peppers and Sweet CornChapter 3: Soups* Summer Vegetable Soup* Hamburger Stew* Vietnamese Bo Kho* Sichuan Pork Soup* Chicken Curry Soup* Poblano and Chicken Soup* Hot and Sour Soup* Chicken Tortilla Soup* Creamy Chicken and Vegetable Soup* Spicy and Creamy Chicken Soup* Thai Yellow Curry Coconut Soup* Chicken and Kale Soup* Savory Chicken and Mushroom SoupChapter 4: Seafood and Poultry* Creamy Shrimp Scampi* Chinese-Style Steamed Ginger Scallion Fish* Easy Lobster Bisque* Sesame-Ginger Chicken* Savory Shrimp with Tomatoes and Feta* Chicken Bratwurst Meatballs with Cabbage* Shortcut Dan Dan-Style Chicken* West African Peanut Stew* Now and Later Butter Chicken* Sweet and Spicy Chicken Tinga* Mexican-Style Chicken with Red Salsa* Thai Green Curry* Chicken Tikka Masala* Chicken Vindaloo* Chicken SchwarmaChapter 5: Beef and Pork* Easy Taco Dip* Ground Beef Shawarma* Corned Beef and Cabbage* Ropa Vieja* Beef Curry* Spicy Basil-Beef Bowls* Stroganoff* 3-2-2-1 Texas Chili* Korean-Style Galbijjim* Carne Guisada* Braised Beef Brisket* Turkish Kebab Gyros* Bo Ssam-Style Pork* Carne Adovada* Pork Saag* Pork Carnitas* Smoky Ribs* Sausages and KaleChapter 6: Desserts* Keto Cheesecake* Pumpkin Pie Pudding* Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake* Thai Coconut Pandan Custard* Indian Zucchini Kheer* Coconut-Almond Cake* Dark Chocolate Cake* Almond-Carrot CakeChapter 7: Kitchen Staples* Soft- and Hard-Boiled Eggs* Cauliflower Rice* Ghee* Garam Masala* Shawarma Spice Mix* Best-Ever Savory Thyme Dip* Tzatziki Sauce* Mustard Dressing* Easy Asian Peanut Dressing* Creamy Cilantro-Jalapeno DressingAdditional Sections at the End:* Instant Pot FAQs* * "When should I use natural release versus quick release?"* * "Can I double the recipe, and if so, do I need to add more time?"* * "How much liquid do I need for every recipe?"* * "How full can I fill the pot? I love this authors Indian instant pot cookbook and since I follow a keto diet I was super excited to pre-order this cookbook. Sadly, I’m returning it. It does not follow the keto guidelines and the net carb counts are extremely high on many of the dishes. Sad to say, this won’t work for my needs.

OK. You’ve got your Instant Pot. Now what? The instrument panel can be somewhat intimidating, and you haven’t gone near a pressure cooker in this entire century. What to do?Enter Urvashi Pitre. Not only does she understand the Ketogenic diet, but she also knows how to translate the Instant Pot instructions into easy-to-understand recipes that will save you time, and keep you on track to stay Keto. She is a low carber herself, so you won’t find faux low carb recipes in this book. But none of that matters if the recipes don’t translate into delicious, satisfying meals. That she accomplishes in spades.Frankly, I was afraid to go near my new Instant Pot Ultra. I didn’t know what to cook, how to cook it, or even how to set the thing. Urvashi walked me through beef stroganoff, which was delicious, and then I tried her beef curry. Despite using a rather tough (and inexpensive) cut of meat, the beef was tender, and the flavor of the spices was sublime. Yesterday I made my very first corned beef and cabbage in the Instant Pot, and it was delicious. My husband said it was the best he ever had.If all the Keto Instant Pot cookbooks out there, this is by far the best.

Nothing in the description stated it was primarily Indian recipes. Those simply won't work for my family; I cook for multiple family members who have IBS.The remaining sound good, but only if I overlook that they aren't true Keto. Complete waste, returning ASAP.

I ordered the hard copy which is due out later this month and then learned that I could get the digital copy early at a discount. It arrived yesterday and I already made one of the recipes. Urvashi's recipes are almost fool-proof if you follow the directions correctly and this is coming from someone who is not a "cook" in the traditional sense of the word. This is my second cook-book by Urvashi (plus I've tried recipes from her Twosleevers.com website) and so far, everyone has been a home run. I can't wait for the hard copy to come out also! Thanks for the great recipes Urvashi, and the clear directions for those of us who don't yet cook intuitively! You definitely have a fan. The great thing about this book is the recipes don't taste "low carb" and are not just for those following a Ketogenic diet, so my "non-keto" husband has been equally pleased.

New to Keto and just the intro alone will give you a broad idea about the diet/way of eating. I have been poring over the book, will be cooking some dishes this weekend, can’t wait. This is not your simple American dump recipes. But they aren’t hard either! Very tasty. I see there are a few key ingredients and some unique ingredients. But hey I think we can all agree “diets” can be boring. This doesn’t even remind me of my goal to lose weight. I have cooked previous recipes of hers. Easy, simple and delish. You have nothing to lose and happy tastebuds to gain!

Review

To me as a life-long activist nourished on systems thinking and Buddhist teachings, this is one of the most intellectually exciting and soul stirring books I've read in years. I had the sense of drinking it, with pleasure and surprise, not having known what I d so thirsted for.By starting with questions and keeping to questions throughout, Daniel engages the reader, and by example frees her from striving for, or pretending to know, any final answers. This approach -- in itself a rare lesson in systems epistemology invites trust, openness, and a restructuring of the mind.Among the gifts for which I am especially grateful are these: Conceptual tools for perceiving and experiencing our mutual belonging, and especially what I've come to call the great reciprocity at the heart of the universe. The ways Goethe, Bortoft, Bateson, Maturana, and Varela are brought in, and key insights mediated with economy and clarity. The abundant evidence of the Great Turning, the manifold transition underway to a life-sustaining culture. And, especially valuable to those of an apocalyptic bent like myself, the 'adaptive cycle' of resilient systems, showing that at 'the edge of chaos' comes opportunity for the emergence of greater complexity and intelligence. These are but a few of the ways in which this remarkable book will enrich my thought, my teaching, and my life in this turbulent world of ours. --Joanna Macy, author of World as Lover, World as SelfThis book is a treasure for everyone who is looking for a guide to more sustainable living and a roadmap for re-designing our societies, regenerating our communities, cities and societies in harmony with natural systems and our home planet.Author Daniel Wahl has deep experience to share and his knowledge in this beautiful book will help all those aspiring to be responsible global citizens working for our common future. --Hazel Henderson, author of Ethical MarketsLife on the Planet has sustained itself for billions of years by continually regenerating itself. Our modern industrial culture has interfered with these natural processes to the point of causing massive extinctions of species and threatening our very survival. This book is a valuable contribution to the important discussion of the worldview and value system we need to redesign our businesses, economies, and technologies, in fact, our entire culture so as to make them regenerative rather than destructive. --Fritjof Capra, author of The Web of Life

In this groundbreaking book, Daniel Christian Wahl rejects our paradigmatic tendency toward quick-fix answers to our monumental crises, but instead, challenges humanity to ask the right questions, or to begin “living the questions.” (21) Wahl suggests that the urgency of the situation demands deeply considered inquiry, and a return to philosophical, ethical reflection that guides how we view our world, and act toward and within world. Our paradigmatic reaction: We don’t have time! Wahl wisely points out that we don’t have any time to waste on the same old answers that created humanity’s “terminal crisis of an outdated worldview.” (24) Instead, Wahl suggests we return to a love of wisdom and begin, through humanity’s new cosmological lens, living lives of deep inquiry toward “co-creating regenerative societies” and “collaborative cultures.”Wahl thoroughly explores his crucial inquiry, applying regenerative thinking to diverse topics such as activism, economics, innovation, and even spirituality. Four main ideas emerge from his deep analysis to challenge our outdated notions of society building, and invite us to not only survive, but thrive as a species within a multi-species planetary community: The shift from ‘sustaining innovation’ to ‘transformative innovation,’ the shift from dualistic/ either-or thinking, to systemic, complexity-based thinking and relating, The shift from the old industrial, technological model toward biologically-inspired innovation, and from large-scale agriculture and traditional economics, toward health and resilience by mimicking healthy ecosystems and creating circular economies. This book is an inspirational and necessary handbook for our age, full of novel tools and considerations essential to create a better future for all planetary beings. We must embrace regenerative culture design now and create a beautiful possibility…by “living the questions” deeply and fully, together.

A worthy read for people interested in cultivating a more beautiful world. If you like the work of Charles Eisenstein (highly recommended!) you will likely appreciate this book, too.

Beyond simply serving as an aggregate collection of current theories, leaders and projects leading the way into a deeply sustainable future, this book is inspiring and weaves a strong common thread (and economic case, among other forms of "wealth") for all disciplines and walks of life to work together, instead of competing against each other. A good read if you're looking for the next level of sustainability.

This book is about living the questions together. It brings coherence and depth into a cross-disciplinary exploration of what's possible when humans engage in regeneration of the earth and society. Inspiring, engaging, full of excellent research and articulation of what resilience is and why its important, and its an invitation to imagine thriving.

Forward thinking, mixed with inspiration and artistry. If you care about the world that we and future generations will inherit, read and regenerate.

Wonderful compendium of all the regenerative ideas and projects that I have been following for the past 35 years plus many I hadn't heard of yet. A rich book for all who want to be part of world transformation through ecological design.

a full assessment of where we need to go for future sustainability of the Earth. Should be required reading for everyone.

Did what they said they would do and what I would expect. That's the definition of good service.
