Aldous Huxley, take on spirituality and the base of all religions as seen through the eyes of saints and spiritual leaders. It's a life changing beautifully written book. Aldous Huxley is one of the greatest minds of our time. (As an advice, this was my first spiritual book outside the Bible, so it was kind of a Perennial Philosophy crash course for me. Some words are difficult to understand, so it's better to have a background on other religions to fully understand.)

This is a book that I think I will be referencing back to for the rest of my life. If you basically want to understand the entire perspective of a Western thinker on the commonalities of Eastern religion and mysticism as well as Christian mystic thought, this is the book. Think of it as the complete tutorial on what people *think* they're saying when they utter the cliche "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual." Now if a person were truly that, and very intelligent as well, then this book explains how they might think about God, self, universe, time, idolatry, salvation, truth, good, evil, immortality, mortification, charity, prayer... yeah, you name it everything you've stuffed in a closet in the back of your mind and called it 'religion' is presented here from the mystic point of view and collected wisdom of multiple 'religions'.This might properly be called, at least I will, the set of ultimate goals for the self, or perhaps the self-less perfection of the realization of the divine in the individual and the purpose of all human consciousness. I'm not used to speaking this way, it will take me some time to get through all of the material in this course of study, but I can feel it working on me.Several years ago I wrote that all I care about is wisdom. This is true. But one tends to think of wisdom as an attribute of the self. The Perennial Philosophy extends that challenge beyond the self (and yet within the self) towards the human infinite. So instead of the pursuit and capture of wisdom like a trophy to put on your mantle and show off, the Perennial Philosophy explains that this is an attainment of psychic, spiritual as well as intellectual dimensions.There's some speculation in this which is especially clunky in the dated volume which contemporaries more well versed in psychology will easily spot. Also Huxley had been taken in by claims of faith healing and ESP that should not be taken seriously, but he seems to understand this. Also the book gets a bit murky in dealing with the concepts of time vis a vis Time and Eternity. And yet the book becomes quite persuasive in describing how nations and religions and philosophies that deal with reality in progressive time rather than in eternal timelessness, inevitably make bloody violent sacrifices to time (God the destroyer of all things, in time).Huxley presents a convincing case for the unification of purposeful thought in this volume by taking contextualized quotes from a variety of wise ancients and mystics. It puts, for me, God back where God should belong in all thought, and the discipline of finding God central in human moral purpose.I am convinced that this is the kind of material that is central to the human experience. It clears up a lot of things.

This book is nothing short of a masterpiece. Not only because it's content is brilliant, but because Huxley put it together with such brightness, that only a genius mind could do it. The Perennial Philosophy is a manual for anyone interested in Eastern Philosophical and Religious Thought. It goes deep inside the heart and teachings of the most influential Mystics that ever lived. The book is practical, clear and detailed, covering important subjects that would take many students years to collect from several different sources.Huxley proves brilliantly the Unity, Truth and Wisdom behind most religions. They all share a common source and ground that passes from faith, repentance and death to self into a divine nature of pure love and joy. He covers topics such as "Personality, Sanctity, Divine Incarnation, God in the World, Charity, Truth, Grace and Free Will, Good and Evil, Rituals", etc. So many important topics for one interesting in pursuing a divine path with a sincere heart toward God. If I could, I would rate this book a 4.5. Arthurs has produced a gift to preachers as he calls them to the task of reminding the people of God about the things of God. The book begins with three chapters containing the theological foundation for preachers as "remembrancers" and concludes with four chapters showing the "how."Particularly strong were Arthurs chapters on Style, Story, and Delivery. The book is certainly more principle based than prescriptive, which I find to be a strength. I highly recommend the book for the modern preacher.Disclaimer: I have not read widely enough in the preaching realm to evaluate Arthurs book against others. I have evaluated the book simply on its own merit in how beneficial it was for me personally. In the coming months, I hope to have a broader base of reading to judge this book against

I have, in the past, served as a professor of preaching at a seminary, and if I get another chance in the future to teach preaching, the main required textbook will still be Bryan Chapell's book "Christ-Centered Preaching". The other supplemental but required text will be Jeffery Arthurs' "Preaching As Reminding". Arthurs' book is just that good! Purchase a hard copy AND a Kindle. Then, read it and reap. Outstanding!

A good reminder for people who’ve been at this for along while. Highly readable. Worth the time.

I have read my fair share of books on preaching through the decades. Many of them are encouraging and helpful, unpacking the "Why" and "What" of Christian preaching before they get into the "How". Each one normally has a unique perspective and pursuit. Some are trendy, many others are traditional. Jeffrey D. Arthurs, professor of preaching and communication at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, South Hamilton, MA, has recently added his assessment and angle in a new 192 page softback, “Preaching as Reminding: Stirring Memory in an of Forgetfulness”. These seven chapters are easy to read and retain, while supplying strengthening substance.The first three chapters of “Preaching as Reminding” look carefully at the role of remembering and forgetting in Sacred Scripture, and how the preacher is called to be a reminder, a remembrancer. A remembrancer is not one who simply repeats clichéd commonplaces. Rather, the Christian preacher “must rouse that which is already present within the child of God: knowledge of our Father’s love and majesty” (6).Theology, doctrine, thoughtful exegesis, apologetics and more, all have their place in stout Christian preaching, affirms Arthurs Therefore when “ministers preach God’s powerful Word as faithful stewards, their words have a derivative power that accomplishes God’s will through the power of the Spirit. Thus, when a preacher faithfully re-presents redemptive history, worshipers see the hand of God smite the Egyptians on their behalf, part the Red Sea for their deliverance, and provide manna in the desert for them…The past is brought into the present with power, and actions results. In short, God’s Word, faithfully announced builds faith” (490). As I worked my way through these three chapters, my heart was filled with a sense of revived devotion, and a roused gratefulness for my vocation.Chapters four through six address design and style, along with story and delivery, as aids to awaken memory in the hearts and heads of parishioners. The author takes the time to bring out the importance of vivid language as well as the role of repetition and rhythm. Additionally he recounts the value of story and how story works in a sermon. Lastly, Arthurs tackles the delicate area of delivery: facial expressions, tonal qualities, and emotional facets. The embodiedness of preaching is essential because, “as oral communications, preaching is incarnational. God has placed his Word in bodies so that we turn ink into blood” (105). Yet further, running through these three chapters is a hearty refrain that rhythmically pounds away: the Lord’s remembrancer is to be about persuasion by first being personally persuaded. The heart of the preacher is regularly addressed!The last chapter in “Preaching as Reminding” takes up the point about the embodiment of proclamation and remembering, and moves into ceremony and symbol. Arthurs gives the minister very practical approaches to baptism and the Lord’s Supper, but also to the worship of a congregation, the public reading of Scripture, and the pastoral prayer. In all of these additional public tasks of a minister, the author keeps placing before us that we are the Lord’s remembrancers, even in these assignments.“Preaching as Reminding” was a pleasure to read. It has given me assurances where I often doubt myself, challenged me on a few items that I have taken for granted, and given me a renewed appreciation for what I am called to do. It is an ideal book for seminarians and ministerial interns moving toward ordination. But it is also a usable volume that I would rejoice to see in the hands of many ministers. I encourage preachers reading this review to quickly take up a copy and pour over it. While there are many good books written on the subject of preaching of them are rather unremarkable and fail to leave a lasting impression. Preaching as Reminding is both a good book and a remarkable one and I believe will leave a lasting impression on the preaching ministry of those who read it.The basic premise of the book is that one of the primary roles of the preacher is that of remembrancer a title derived from Lancelot Andrewes sermon "Remember Lot's wife." As Arthurs notes in his introduction the role of stirring memory through preaching receives little attention although there many examples of that very role in Scripture. Arthurs states, "Ministers must serves as the Lord's remembrancers because things learned can be buried, lost, amputated, or corrupted (p. 6)." In the first three chapters of the book Arthurs fleshes out a biblical theology of memory. In chapters one and two the importance and meaning of God remembering is developed. In the second our forgetfulness and the way to remember are addressed. In the third chapter Arthurs begins to address the role of preaching in stirring memory. Andrews makes the statement, "In a sense, all biblical preaching is in the context of a worship service is an act of reminding (pp. 48-49)." Andrews proceeds to argue the importance of memory in stirring the affection. In the closing chapters Arthurs draws out the implications of the importance of memory in the areas of style, the use of story, delivery, and ceremony and symbol in the context of preaching and worship.I think Arthurs makes a sound case for the importance of stirring memory in the preaching of the word. His chapters on style on delivery have been truly helpful to me in thinking through and evaluating my preaching ministry. I would commend this book to all those called to be preachers called to be the Lord's remembrancers. Disclosure: I received a review copy of the book from the publisher for the purpose of reviewing it. I have no complaints about this book. It was well paced, there were no obvious plot holes, it was well edited, and it held my attention. It was similar to "Wise Child", which I appreciated, but different enough not to feel redundant. I was happy to learn more about Juniper's past and how she became a doran.

This is a touching coming of age story about Ninnoc, a Princess of medieval Cornwall. Here she studies to become a Doran (good witch). She must battle against a relative/antagonist and save her beloved family, friends and home. The pacing is rather slow, but the characters are realistic, amusing and likeable. There's a lot of pleasant daily life scenes, and the children were rather sweet. I liked the glimpse into Juniper and Finbar's childhood, and how they met. This is book 2 of the Wise Child series. I preferred Wise Child, but this was still a good book.

I'm a guy (you know the drill - testosterone has me rooting for the robots in the terminator movies) with 3 young daughters and so story time for me can be it's own kind of hell, overpopulated with too many thoughtful ponies, joyous princesses and other terrors from the Id.Juniper at least is a story that can engross a child while being satisfying to the adult reader. I never once had the urge to plunge my head through the sheetrock in the bedroom whereas when forced to read stories like the Pony Pals, that's all I can think about. The wise women in Juniper are are a bit too knowing and all seeing, the plot a bit formulaic but other than that, it's a story of growing up, persistence against adversity good and evil, courage and adventure and some things in between. Same holds through the rest of the trilogy: Wise Child and Colman though they're not written in order.I suspect that these stories catch the mind of young girls more than boys and are aimed more at a female audience. I don't know if I would have read it by myself, but with mission to read to my daughters, it was an enjoyable journey. I could see adult women enjoying this for it's own sake. In any case the books of this trilogy are well above the average children's fare for girls or for boys. Definitely worth the price of admission.

A true classic. Holds one interest to the last page.

As one who enjoys fantasy, I found Juniper a fairly satisfying and magical read. I thought the beginning third of the book was very strong. The characters were well developed, the plot had all the traditional elements of good vs. evil and the magic of the dorans is well laid out.As the book progressed, I found myself being somewhat critical over certain aspects of the story, in particular the characters. They just started to seem two dimensional to me, a bit stereotypical. For example, the evil sorceress Meroot was rather predicable in her actions. Actually, many of the characters were very predicable a la fairy tales of their behaviors.As one who has read many magical fantasies, the initiation scene with Juniper and Trewyn in the hut naked breathing in green wood smoke just didn't work for me. Then suddenly they could move things all over the room. It seemed "over the top" regarding believability, even in a fantasy. At times, it seemed that the author, who clearly did her research especially in the art of spinning and weaving, threw many different elements of fantasy into the cauldron. Some of it worked;other aspects just seemed as if they were put in just because. There were many loose ends that either came together far too easily and conveniently, or conversely were left up in the air.Although I enjoyed the first half of the book, the ending was disappointing to me. I am looking forward to reading Wise Child.

This book is absolutely magical !! Would highly recommend for children and adults alike ! :)

I can see why Gabriel Garcia Marquez won the Nobel Prize for literature. The book has a very unique style. It is more like painting a picture with words than telling a story in the usual sense. In a painting you can move your focus, look around and see different parts quickly, then maybe study some details. Similarly, the scenes in the book are not in chronological order. In fact, the first scene is actually near the end temporally (so don't worry that the next paragraph of this review is giving anything away, you will find these things near the beginning of the book). The author gives a glimpse of various points in time, and then fills in details as the book progresses. And, it is more than just a picture of these characters' lives, it is a picture of a time and a place. At the end of the book, you will feel like you have lived there.For most of the book, I thought it was a tragedy not a love story. I disagree with many reviewers, it was not a book about unrequited love, because Florentino Ariza was never in love. Even though Florentino Ariza was successful in a worldly sense, I felt sorry for him. He never loved Fermina Daza, they were never much more than acquaintances. He wasted his entire life being in love with the idea of being in love, but never understanding what love is. Love is not a disease, it is not infatuation, it is not lust, it is not an extreme form of like. For most of his life, his love was about himself, even when he was proud to be suffering for it. Only at the very end did he realize that love is about the one being loved, it is something you do; love is a verb, not a state of being. Also, only at the end of the book did I really understand the title of the book.

The writing is nothing short of masterful. My problem is that the protagonist, at least for the majority of the book, is a reprehensible human being. He falls in love at a very young age even though he's never actually talked to the girl, only exchanging notes, and maintained this obsession for his lifetime. She marries another after firmly rejecting him. It is incomprehensible to me that he sustains this for over 50 years. During that time, even though he is described as somewhat slovenly in his appearance and not attractive, he manages to voraciously bed multiple women, some for one time some as ongoing lovers. He only truly "loves" one person. A girl sent to him for protection who he seduces at the age of fourteen after grooming her for a few years. So we are supposed to be heartened when in his 70's he finally "gets the girl." My revulsion at this character was only overcome by the absolutely beautiful writing, the fully realized characters and the description of time and place. Be warned, this is a long and complex book, not an easy read.

Now, as a grad student, I HATED this book. Not because it wasn't well written but because I hated the characters and the overall theme. Not sure why everyone loves this one so much. That's my honest review. Take it how you wish.

This stunning work captures the feelings of love and tragedy all in one. Of course, the author is very famous for this and other works. Be ready for a dark road down a very interesting path as the years go by in the lives of the two main characters. There is a little funny business about his sexual exploits but I don't want to give away the special way he worded things. Gotta read it!

The somewhat languid pace of the novel fits with the times, the climate, and the social mores of the setting. It also enables a nuanced exploration of the kinds of love experienced by the main characters in the story. It could be argued that the central theme of the relationship between the two primary characters is somewhat farfetched, but when does love follow a formula (except in rom-coms)? While not a page-turner, the story remains engaging throughout. The author has a lovely way with words (as captured by his English translator) that brings the texture of people, time and place to vivid life. I thought the author let the primary male character off the hook for his poor judgment in the final (of many) love relationships before returning to his lifelong inamorata. But maybe it is also my own biases intruding. All in All, a great read from an author of almost magical word-power.

I absolutely adore this book. I've always been heavy into Russian literature and was interested in reading something different - this book hit the spot. Marquez has a way of writing that entices you and makes you never want to put this book down. His romantic vocabulary as well as vivid writing style really grabbed me. I highly suggest this for any lovers of Nabokov.

I almost put this book down and didn't finish it more than once. But I forged on due to a good friend's gushing response to it so thought I had to finish it to see what I might miss otherwise. The story was very tedious and too many switch backs in time to confuse. Characters were not worth all the many many pages given them. I didn't embrace, identify with, or sympathize with any of them. Would NOT recommend this book to anyone I know, including my book group.

This was highly recommended to me by someone whose opinion I valued. Completely different from anything I had read before. The book engages you in the lives of various characters and shows them persevering in a tough time. It took me a reading marathon, finished it after being buried in it almost a whole day.
