I received this pre-published edition of Robert Massie's Catherine the Great as part of the Early Reviewers program of Library Thing. I received the biography free of charge in exchange for this review.I had high hopes for this work based upon my experience with two of Massie's previous works, Peter the Great and Dreadnought, both of which I found outstanding. Quite some time ago, I read a previous biography of Catherine the Great written by Henri Troyat and found her life story to be fascinating. Having said that, I must say I was somewhat disappointed with this biography.Perhaps my disappointment stems from excessive expectations, but in any event I found it failed to measure up to Massie's earlier work. When compared to the Troyat biography, while I found this work to be more approachable and reader friendly, it was lacking in the more detailed and deeper analysis provided by Troyat. By no means is this a poor effort, but the subject matter is about as rich as it comes and I found Massie's result to be somewhat pedestrian and simple. All the bases are covered from a factual standpoint, but the book is quite weak when it comes to any kind of analysis. The history is set out in a series of short, choppy chapters (over seventy chapters, each of which is broken into further subsections) that do little more than take the reader from event to event in the life of Catherine, one of the most intriguing lives of the period.Massie is a fine biographer and historian. I can't help but feel that with subject matter this rich, he could have done far better.

One of the BEST biographies I have EVER read. The maps were very useful. The entire story read like a novel but was still filled with essential & interesting facts. It was sad to read that Catherine repeated many of the same mistakes (which she swore she never would) that Elizabeth I committed concerning her immediate family when Catherine was under her tutelage. I especially liked the idea of short chapters with breaks within those chapters. So much easier to read than the usual "History Book" with a zillion pages, too many facts & footnotes, & ponderous prose. A welcome change. Would give it TEN stars! Massie's other books are very similar: informative, well-written, but eminently readable.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about Russian History, so I’m not in a position to judge Robert K. Massie’s Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman on accuracy, but I read and thoroughly enjoyed his books on the World War I naval war, so I have no reason to doubt his accuracy when it comes to Catherine the Great. So much of what you see about Catherine the Great is about her sexuality, so it was wonderful to read about her ideas and how and why they changed throughout her reign and about her accomplishments. She’s such a fascinating subject and Massie did a great job describing what developed and formed her personality and how her experiences changed her thoughts from childhood to Empress then over her reign as Empress. Since Catherine was a Western European taking an Eastern European throne, Massie does a great job showing how it disadvantaged her and how she overcame her subject’s suspicions. He also does a wonderful job fitting in the complicated relationship between Russia and the rest of Europe and how the two influenced each other. If you’re a fan of History or Biography, this is definitely a book to put on your reading list.

Massie has written several books about the rulers of Russia including Nicholas, Peter the Great, and now Catherine the Great. I've thoroughly enjoyed each one, learning about extremely interesting and historically important figures. Catherine led a semi tragic life before she became the empress of Russia. Married to an immature prince from Germany, who had no plans of embracing Russia, including it's language, religion, army, or culture. Unlike Catherine, who also came from Germany, but strove to learn the language, convert to the Russian Orthodox, church, and made an effort to get to know whatever Russians she was allowed to have contact. Her personal life was a lot racier than one would expect from someone in her position, but given her personal history, understandable.

Sofia Lundberg’s novel, The Red Address Book, does not deliver the comfort and humor promised on the book jacket, although I do agree it is strong tribute to the wisdom of older women and intergenerational devotion. As 96-year-old Doris leaves a written legacy to great-niece Jenny of vignettes from her long and storied life, we also learn why their bond is so strong. I find uplifting that Jenny will head to a more fulfilling life because of Doris’ love, wisdom, and encouragement.That said, close to half the novel describes dailiness—Doris’ current physical frailties and struggles and Jenny’s children’s minutiae. I found this tedious and often painful.The premise of this novel, remembering stories of important people in your address book, sounds delightful. In this case, however, the tone is so depressing, the stories became flat and only mildly interesting. The Red Address Book is impressive as a debut novel, but I am sorry to report disappointing enjoyment factor from this reader.

As I write my review for The Red Address Book by Sofia Lundberg, I am conflicted. I expected to love this novel, but I didn’t. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I initially thought this book would be somewhat light-hearted, but the novel tackles some very sad topics, aging, death, loneliness and elder care to name just a few.The story was interesting, but it felt dated. Granted, Doris, the main character, is 96 years old. She is frail and her life is ending. Perhaps, it was a purposeful decision to use antiquated language and terms of endearment like “darling” or “the little one,” but why then did I have a similar feeling when Jenny, Doris’ grandniece joined the story. She is a young, modern mother with a special affection for Doris, but her sections didn’t feel authentic to me.The author explains a great deal instead of allowing the story to unfold naturally. Also, big events are glossed over and there is a lack of an emotional response to major tragedies. Some storylines are left unfinished, and some of them defy believability.I may sound ultra critical, and I don’t mean to be, because there is much to like here. The premise of the novel was unique, using address book entries to tell the story was a smart approach. The short chapters helped move the story along. Doris is a fascinating character.I am sure there will be a following for this book, and many four and five star reviews. It could be a case of it is me not the novel. Don’t let my review discourage you from reading it.

She has few visitors, but her weekly Skype calls with Jenny—her American grandniece, and her only relative—give her great joy and remind her of her own youth. When Doris was a girl, she was given an address book by her father, and ever since she has carefully documented everyone she met and loved throughout the years. Looking through the little book now, Doris sees the many crossed-out names of people long gone and is struck by the urge to put pen to paper. In writing down the stories of her colorful past—working as a maid in Sweden, modelling in Paris during the 30s, fleeing to Manhattan at the dawn of the Second World War—can she help Jenny, haunted by a difficult childhood, unlock the secrets of their family and finally look to the future? And whatever became of Allan, the love of Doris’s life?My Thoughts: I was hooked on The Red Address Book from the very first page. I loved Doris, who at 96, looks back on the life she has led, filling in her memories from names in her address book. Stories she narrated for us in alternating storylines take us to the past and then bring us back to the present. I felt as if Doris was a friend, and that her experiences in the past could have happened to people I knew and loved.Jenny is her great niece, with whom she Skypes regularly. So when Doris falls, and then later has a medical crisis, Jenny comes to her in Stockholm, bringing along her youngest child, Tyra. Her second point is that, even as we depend more and more on ships to bring us all that stuff, the industry has become more and more invisible. Ports have moved to deeper, more secure harbors away from cities; the goods transported by ships are hidden away in generic containers; and many ships fly “flags of convenience” that conceal who owns them leaving troubling questions about responsibility when one sinks (as two do per week) and or when a crew member dies at sea (as do two thousand per year). Rose, a self-confessed landlubber, boards a container ship for a five-week voyage to give us an inside view of it all, from ports to pirates, from storms to the solitary lives of the crew. She has to leave the ship on a few “side trips” to complete her picture (which interrupts the continuity of the voyage) and the reading is slow in spots, but, for the most part, she provides revelation after revelation on a subject I was too ignorant to know how ignorant I was.

This book didn’t deliver at all on the promise of telling the stories about how all our goods are provided by freighters carrying containers of goods. Very disappointing and shallow book. Makes me wonder if there was an editor involved. Perhaps it was a book developed by marketers since there’s a real interest in this topic. But this book just doesn’t deliver. Not even close. Unfortunately.There was really very little in this book about shipping and freight containers. It was a free association by the author during and about her trip on a freighter. A real disappointment!

Do you realize that 90% of the goods we use world wide are transported on the seas around the world and this book deals the container ships and the people who mostly live and work in obscurity. The author hitches a ride on one of these modern day container ships with the largest one being able to carry 15,000 20 foot metal boxes. Do you realize how much product can be moved in one trip. The ship that she rides on hold almost 7,000 containers.She introduces to us the people that are working on these ships and the conditions they work under with more modern technology and less people on the ships. The nationalities have changed along with the wages and the way the owners take care of the crews. The food that was being served on this ship was pretty sad. With modern day news you are probably aware of the pirate problem on long the Somali coast and there is a chapter or two that deal with this which in my opinion is were this book bogs down a little bit. She also talks about the merchants from the time around WW 1 and WW2 and especially moving story about Diana Jarmin. There is a chapter about all these boats and ships on the water and the effects on the sea life.I would give this book a 3 1/2 star rating it is a decent read.

Rose George's book is shows us a small slice of what the shipping world is like. George experiences first hand a tiny sample of life on a ship and looks into the lives of some of the characters she meets along the way. Her account includes a bit about piracy, working conditions, economic inequality, environmental issues, and everyday life on a ship. I think her insight is valuable, especially for those wholly unfamiliar with the shipping industry. Could it be more complete? Sure. I think that the shipping industry is so huge and complex that to deep dive into each of its facets would result in an unreadable mess. George is a journalist and her writing style makes for an easy, enjoyable read. If you are interested in the shipping industry, you'll enjoy the book.

My grandmother came from a seafaring family on the coast of Ireland, and as a little boy I heard countless tales of men at sea (women didn't go to sea except as passengers in her day). Seafaring life sounded dangerous yet fascinating. My relatives in Ireland continued going to sea, but I realize that fewer did so in each succeeding generation, and this book explains why. Most ships fly "flags of convenience" from countries that have little to do with the ship or crew itself. The crews can come from anyplace, and the ownership of ships is often buried in layers of charters and corporate fronts.The author goes on a trip from Britain to Singapore on a Maersk ship with a British master and an international crew. We get to know the master, who is at the end of his career, and many of his crew members. She details just how monotonous the trip is, and how dangerous it is as the ship goes around the Horn of Africa. Rather than let us suffer through a dreary accounting of that voyage, she digresses into stories about various aspects of the shipping industry.The author tells us about ships that sink, ships that are abandoned when it's no longer profitable to run them (along with their unfortunate crews), the abuses that come along with the Flag of Convenience system, and mostly the difficulty of going to sea. The shipping business has changed greatly from my great grandfather's time. In his day, there were still sailing ships, and ships under power burned coal. The crew sizes were much larger, and cargo loading and unloading was done by hand. A ship might be in port for weeks while its cargo was unloaded and new cargo loaded.The author explains how today ships have much smaller crews. With containerization loading and unloading takes hours instead of days or weeks. The city docks in port cities are closed, and now the ships pull up to container ports far away from the centers of the cities. The crews get little or no shore leave, so basically they spend months confined to the ship with no release from the monotony.I found the book fascinating, but I was disappointed to see that seafaring life isn't what it was in my great grandfather's time. In some ways it has improved (seaman aren't locked in chains or shanghaied like they were in his day), but in other ways it has gotten worse. Being a seafarer has never been easy, and the author effectively conveys this message. However, I always thought being a merchant seaman would be an adventurous life, but that era apparently has passed. I find that very sad.

A clinician at the veterinary hospital I was doing a summer rotation in radiation oncology at recommended this book. Boy am I glad I listened to him! As having completed only my first year of veterinary school this was an easy to read and quick reference to a lot of the different types of neoplasia our patients suffered from. I'll definitely be using this book as a reference throughout my veterinary career.

I really like this book so far. It has a lot of information that is beyond the scope of a veterinary class (meaning, there is a lot of information there for resident level). I am using this to supplement class notes. It helps to read thing in a different perspective. I plan on keeping this on hand for reference in rotations and in practice.

This is *the* volume -- cited and referenced by all the rest -- for small animal (read: pet) oncology. It's well-written, readable and comprehensive.

Love the colors in the book. This provides a good basic information on veterinary oncology, how chemotherapy and radiation works. Different types of neoplasia, the types of treatment protocol used and their prognosis. Some interesting comparative aspects as well.

Yo le leo ami bebe este libro desde que nació y aprendió a fijarse en los animales.... como las imágenes no son muy claras y tienen muchos manchones de colores le era difícil enfocarse, pero le gustaba que le leyera cantando, luego aprendió a pasar la pagina y con el tiempo a ver los animales. Ya tiene casi 9 meses y aún le gusta este libro.

I've got a 15 month old girl and she loves Brown Bear, Brown Bear. Which is great--except that I'm trying to speak only in Spanish to her (since my hubby speaks to her in English and I want her to learn Spanish so she can speak with our family in Peru!). This book was recommended to me by a mom's group I'm in and my daughter loves it! She always pulls it out and gives it to me to read!!

I love the images, but reading it is a tad boring.

Wish was bilingual-instead of just Spanish.

Love but wish it was board book for my toddler

Our son picks out this book, along with "Oso Pardo" and "Oso Polar", and asks us to read them to him. He can also now "read" it on his own, since he has memorized it! Wonderful book.
