Be aware this book is not rated G like his TV show. The language could be edited but I'm not sure it would be Jackson telling the story anymore nor his emotions expressed accurately, so just skip over it if it offends you. It's not always a feel-good story and doesn't always have happy endings. I needed to hear this story from Jackson and I'm glad to have read it as it has helped me immensely to accept what I've had to do.Anyone who has had to end the life of a beloved pet companion should read this, it will help you. Anyone concerned about the millions of animals in shelters should read this. Anyone considering bringing a pet home from a shelter should read this also. I would venture a guess that anyone who works in a shelter might benefit as well. I think the dedication really tells you what the book is about.I wish there was a G-rated version of this book since I could recommend it to so many more pet lovers, but then that wouldn't be Jackson. We can however see the G-rated Jackson on the TV show.For those who complain that this book is too much about Jackson, well...read the title.

This is so very good!! I like Jackson's "My Cat From Hell" and now I like Jackson.The negative reviews stress that there is swearing in this book. That is true. I'm not particularly sensitive to swearing and this didn't bother me. The swearing was also used only to emphasize a serious situation; it wasn't sprinkled throughout for no reason.The negative reviews also mention that there wasn't enough about Benny the cat. I thought there was quite a bit about Benny. I mean, do we really want a book about how cute Benny was when he played with his mouse? But I really would have liked a picture of Benny. Maybe there was one in a paper edition?I agree with the negative reviews that there weren't all that many hints about training cats. I got this on my Kindle and so was able to sample the beginning. I bought the book with full knowledge that the book would be more about Jackson's journey with cats and less about training cats. If you have a Kindle, sample this before reading.The book is very well written and quite compelling. I assume it was Joel Derfner who did the writing. Who ever wrote this was a master!!!I was thrilled to read Jackson defending "kill" shelters in the publicity war against "no kill" shelters. While I applaud the no kill shelters, it always irks me that they never publicly announce that they cherry pick the animals they take, while the kill shelters have to take all comers. Meaning that the dangerous dog and the old sick cat are turned away from the no kill shelter because they can't rehome them, so they go to the kill shelter and are killed. Then the no kill shelters say send us money because we don't kill. Well, what is supposed to happen to these animals?The only thing I was interested in that wasn't covered by this book was the inside vs outside cat thing. Watching his show it becomes obvious that all the cats are inside cats. I have inside/outside cats (in at night) and I have never even imagined the problems some of these cats display. Is it because they aren't allowed out? I understand that there are circumstances where cats can't be let out. (I live on a dead end street with a huge field behind me. Everyone on the street has a cat so drivers are very careful.) But I wonder if the problems are all caused by confinement.If you like Jackson's show I think you will like this. If you are looking for some help with a cat, look elsewhere.

THE COUP AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY answers the question many American Catholics have asked themselves ever since: "What happened to Catholic Higher Education in America?"Late in the 1967 school year, Archbishop Patrick O''Boyle, chancellor of the University, had initiated an action to "not renew" the contract to employ theology professor, Father Charles Curran, due to the young priest's problematic teachings on sexual matters. Fr. Curran, instead of going quietly, protested the "dismissal"--along with many of his confreres in the university's School of Theology. The chancellor and bishops on the board of trustees relied upon the Church and the Magisterium as their authority for their actions; while Curran and the School of Theology appealed to the "total academic freedom" encapsulated in the norms of the American Association of University Professors, which the University had recently subscribed to in order to elevate its standing in American academia. The board attempted to keep the situation low-key until resolved; however, Fr. Curran and the School of Theology staged a university-wide strike of both students and faculty of every Department within Catholic U.--with the exception of the School of Education, led by the courageous dean, Monsignor Eugene A. Kevane.The young, charismatic Fr. Curran became the darling of the media during the boycott. Within a week, due largely to the firestorm created by the media, the Board of Trustees caved. Not only did they re-instate Fr. Curran, they also gave him tenure...an action they would regret when, a little over a year later, Fr. Curran and over 400 theologians signed an open "Statement of Dissent" against Pope Paul IV's encyclical, Humanae Vitae.Now the Board's earlier capitulation to the principles of "Academic Freedom" over fealty to the Magisterium led to dire consequences. Although a few brave souls struggled valiantly, the Board of Trustees was too fractured to approve a strong response. Dean Kevane had put his finger on the problem when he contended that the issue was "Who would hold the reins of power in the University: the Magisterium or the American Association of University Professors?" Sadly, by default, the latter's principles prevailed and Msgr. Eugene Kevane was forced out of his position as Dean of the School of Education. Apparently, dissent was completely acceptable--except for those who dared dissent against the dissenters. Once the premiere Catholic university of the United States had "gone liberal," many other Catholic colleges and universities followed suite. Fr. Curran maintained his post as a tenured professor of Theology at CUA until 1986, when, under Pope John Paul II, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith declared that Curran was not eligible to be a teacher of Catholic theology.THE COUP AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY is masterfully written, well researched, and extensively documented. I really loved this book. It took me less than 3 days to finish and it was really hard to put down. As a devout Catholic who grew up in the 80's I saw the direct effect of the theologians trying to make themselves the teacher of the faith. This book had my blood boiling, not because I disagreed with it, but simply because I hated how the bishops in charge of the university allowed the sheep to lead the flock. It doesn't make any sense to me that the "Catholic University of America", would in just a few years give in the secularized mentality that is ruining our country today. I pray that our current church leaders stand up for the faith handed down to us by Jesus Christ with no compromise or fear. This book was very well written and informative. If you're interested in how our Catholic universities became secularized then this is the book for you.

Fascinating piece of little known World War One history, how German sailors of the Imperial German Navy were interred for the remainder of the war due to the then United States neutrality early in the war, th ed author does a great job tapping into local resources of the Hampton Roads/Norfolk Virginia and tells of how the local community took in these sailors from a foreign land, and welcomed their customs, way of life, worship and even friendship while the world war was raging in war torn Europe, a book you cant put down, highly recommended for anyone with an interest in World War One history or maritime history.

In the Aura of a Hole is uniquely wonderful, like no other book I've read. It is a daring combination of travelogue, science, environment, philosophy, sociology, history, art, reflection, photography, absurdity, humor - and somehow all these elements are brought together in a beautifully poetic, but also straightforward and unpretentious way.The book has an interesting organization, by chemical element. Each "chapter" examines a particular element (like sodium or chlorine), by combining stories of visits to the sites of material extraction, many beautiful photographs, quotes, anecdotes, sociological facts, drawings of scientific processes, maps, lists, etc. Each section is complete unto itself, transporting the reader not just to the place or the "objective" facts, but to a variety of experiences available in each. She could easily have approached this work as the usual critique of industrial capitalism, with endless facts about the growing toxicity and destruction of our environment; while she certainly includes information about these horrors, her approach is wider, more nuanced, a view from above; or to quote a zen phrase, simply seeing things as they are. The picture and experience that emerges is one that is complex, vague, strange, absurd. For instance, we may learn about a river that is soiled with toxins, while also hearing anecdotes from the people that gain their livelihood from the work, and later experience the wonder of the scientific process that makes it possible, or investigate the philosophical nature of matter.I'm left with the impression that I'm far more connected to these sites than I would normally think - not just in that I consume products made with these raw materials, but more deeply, even that these materials (and their toxic byproducts) are actually IN me; that my life is inextricably connected to the life of these elements, these sites, this system of industrial production, whether I like it or not; that this whole thing is in an incredibly dynamic flux - the activity at these sites ebbs and flows based on countless factors. If any critique of the system emerges from this work, it is a critique that does not simplify, individualize or consumerize blame, but points to a complex reality that few radicals or political movements are willing to face, no matter what political persuasion.Of course, this is just my reading and impression of her book. Because she does not use her book to elaborate simple-minded ideas of credit or blame, the reader could easily be led to many different experiences based on their own perspectives and history. For me, it seems that Laurie Palmer's project is to take people there, to highlight various points in the terrain (physical, economic, philosophical..), to create a space where many perspectives and subjects can cross, and to then allow the reader to experience their own unique experience, mystery, and contradiction on that journey.

A collection of observations and data that are highly informative. Ms Palmer's work, as an imagist and observer of things societal, are well honed. I highly recommend this book for those who wish to examine more closely what our relationships have been and should be to the environments we steward.
