I've been using this book as the textbook for my Japanese Conversation class. I love this textbook, and this is coming from someone who dislikes the best ones because they're, well, textbooks. But there's something about this book here that makes it entertaining to read. I don't know if it's the activities or what, but I find it fairly easy to get through a chapter for homework. The pictures are cute and definitely help assist in the learning process. They use a specific set of characters they made for the book that they introduce in the intro. At first, I thought this was needless, but it helps for later on. However, I was doing activities in this book that called those people by name before I even knew of the character introduction page, and I still managed to tell from context whom was who, so that's good. The vocabulary at the bottom of each page are good for a quick reference or a point of focus for studying for quizzes. It's a neat feature.The book is a great size. Not too big nor small. I guess that doesn't matter too much when reviewing a book, but as a college student who doesn't want her bag too heavy or too full, I like the size.The book is easy to navigate, and I like the way and the order they present the learning material. There's nothing I dislike about this book at all. And the price? Definitely affordable.There's also a romanized version for those who can't read Kanji yet. I have the Kana version myself, and prefer that one. But it's great that this also comes in Romanji, as everyone learning is at different levels and some would benefit more from that version.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's learning or refreshing themselves on the language of Japanese. Even if it's not required for class, this book makes both a good learning tool and a quick reference.

If you plan to travel to Japan and want to know enough of the language to communicate effectively, this book is for you. It teaches handy phrases and how to address and respond to others in Japanese in a respectful and appropriate way. The book is organized into helpful sections about things travelers would likely want to know--shopping, getting around, telling time, dining out, visiting a museum, doing business at the office, etc. Each section includes exercises to help you practice asking and answering questions, and use correct grammar and new vocabulary. There is also a handy cd that helps greatly with learning correct pronunciation and inflection. I knew absolutely no Japanese when I purchased this book for an introductory Japanese course, and I found it easy to follow. I also recommend purchasing the companion Kana workbook, which will teach you Katakana and Hiragana. Overall, this book is great for an overview of the Japanese language and the basic things you'll likely want to be able to communicate whether you travel to Japan for business or pleasure.

I have just begun my study of Japanese, and this book was perfect for me… I know there is a lot of controversy over whether or not to use the Roman alphabet when learning Japanese, but I specifically choose the Romanized version of this text for a number of reasons… First and foremost is the fact that I was raised using the Roman alphabet, and when I began to study the Japanese “alphabets” (Hiragana and Katakana), it was of great help to have the Romanized letters alongside the Kana characters… Having the Roman letters alongside helped not only my pronunciation, but also my memorization of the Kana… Second was the fact that I intend to type emails and other correspondence in Japanese, and if you’re like me and using a Windows computer here in the USA, you are forced to type using the Roman keyboard with the Japanese language pack installed (Windows automatically converts the “qwerty” typing into the appropriate Kana characters)…. And yes, I know if I were to move to Japan, I had better be able to read and write Kana and Kanji, and eventually, perhaps I will fully wean myself off of “Roman”, but for now, it’s just another tool to be used… and if you also get the companion JFBP 1 Kana Workbook, you get the best of both teaching methods!!

I've studied Japanese for a few years in both classroom and self-study formats. Japanese for Busy People (JFBP) is probably the single best option for self-study, both elementary acquisition and for review. I use it for both review of previous learning and for continued additional learning.I highly recommend the kana version, again for both new students and review. It will take practice and a kana learning book for self-starters, but that's true even in a classroom setting -- you'll be forced to learn kana very quickly and it's mostly a routine exercise of practice.JFBP excels for self-learners for three reasons: (1) the content is deliberately reduced to cover only what's required; it has much, much less vocabulary than a typical college text such as Genki. (2) the situations are more focused on adult learners and business travelers (e.g., business introductions, going to restaurants, shopping) and not those of younger people (movies, home visits). (3) the books are very affordable and are in a semi-workbook format instead of a text.The only limitation is that the audio materials are skimpy; it would be nice to have many hours of extended dialog and practice instead of just a couple hours of minimal dialog and vocabulary. Japanese Pod 101 or similar audio podcasts might help supplement that (and are certainly not enough on their own to learn well).I have the 2nd edition as well, and highly prefer the 3rd edition. The lessons flow much better and it is much more modern in the general presentation style; it's highly worth the moderate cost to get the new version.Good luck! Ganbatte kudasai!

Loved this book, it does teach the formal japanese since the set up of the whole books goes around someone named Smith who just moved to japan for business, it's a great set up to make you learn a new language. It comes with the romaji translations, I recomend this book over the Kana version if you're still unfamiliar and learning hiragana and katakana.

Okay, I have enjoyed this annual publication of short plays from previous years but this 2015 edition is slipshod and appears untouched by an editor's hand. Several of the plays have dialogue of multiple characters combined with no indication of whose line it is (as an editing error and not the playwright's intent), typos abound, and text in many cases is formatted incorrectly. It is as though either this was published on a deadline and the plays were submitted so close to that deadline that they could not be reviewed and edited or the person responsible for the layout of the book was drunk and paralyzed while doing so. If this were my only example of these collections, it is such a jumbled mess that it would all but guarantee I would not purchase another.

I haven't read every ten-minute play of 2015 so I can't objectively say that these are, in fact, the best. But you will find a nice variety of collected plays, one of which is sure to interest you. Many of these are clever, and several are silly. All that I have read so far are fun. It's also super convenient that the plays are labeled by how many actors/characters are needed. This is a good read.

I am also a nurse who is currently working in a psychiatric unit. I could totally relate to the passion and dedication I feel no matter what kind of crap you have to deal with. I have seen all sorts of ways people try to destroy themselves. I have been called names hit had body fluids spewed on me and seen both the worst and best of the human race! The most noble nursing I ever did was to work as a Hospice nurse for ten years. I have the greatest admiration for the ER nurse. I tried it for a year in a Children's Hospital but that was emotionally tough when a child died. I can't even begin to imagine something like 9/11. I am 72 years old and just can't seem to retire. I love my profession.

Great book -all first hand accounts of the working world of ER nurses. Many lay people might have trouble believing that some things in the book actually happened (like the soccer mom who couldn't understand why a patient in full cardiac arrest was treated before her son's minor injury), but I am sure most nurses have experienced something similar in their career. The stories range from hear-breaking to hilarious. Some stories about jaded healthcare professionals made me cringe, but the work sadly has that effect on some people. This is a must-read for any nurse and I think non-nurses will enjoy it as well.

Some of the stories are quite grueling to read, even for a nurse. The stories, both wrenching and those with gallows humor ring true.While there is pride in the profession, there is still the problem that nurses, 'eat their own' and run down nurses in other specialties. It weakens us as a group and at times shows up in this book.Bless those who dig into the unimaginable on a daily basis in healthcare, and still care.

I read this book in a day, unable to put it down. I have been out of the ER for nearly nine years now, but the non-9-11 stories brought it all back. Working in smaller ERs, I never had to take part in an actual disaster, but reading the other stories made me feel that I was there again. For the 9-11 nurses: you ARE heroes. Most of us do what we do because.....this is what we do, but the ones who cared for the victims of 9-11 are a step above that.

Echo Heron delivers once again! I have read all of her books about nurses, and this one is not to be missed. Among other nurse stories, she gives voice to nurses who worked at Ground Zero. This is a POV I have not been able to find, until now. Echo was persistent in getting these stories told. Kudos to her! A must read for all nurses, and anyone interested in nurses' intimate experience with the tragic devastation on 9/11.

I have read Echo Heron's other books and enjoyed all of them. I figured this book would be a good read to. I was right. I liked that the nursing stories were from the heart. Their tough stories to read because a lot of them are heartbreaking. Especially the 9/11 ones. I wish the book was longer because I wasn't ready for it end . I read this in one night. If you like true nursing stories then read this . It really shows you what ER nurses experience on a daily basis. I think all of the nurses in this book are amazing people. You will to when you finish the book.

Having read Echo Heron's first book on her life as an Intensive Care nurse and the following one Condition Critical several years agol I was so pleased she had written another book on true episodes not only in her life and the lives of other Nurses but especially this one which was particularly interesting covering experiences on 9/11. I ordered this book immediately I saw the name of the author. A first class read.

I liked the format of the book: essays by many different ER nurses at various ages and stages of their careers. Some stories were horrifying, some were appalling, but all showed how hard nurses work and what thankless jobs they have. And some stories actually had happy endings. I am going to look for more of Ms. Heron's books on my Kindle.

 John is one of the two lead artists who worked on The Lord of the Rings film. In his latest book Lost Worlds he explores places, mythical or not, that have fascinated people. Some of the places include Eden, Babylon, Troy, Pompeii, Asgard and more -- 24 in total.The hardcover has a circular cutout holding a magnifying plastic -- glass would probably break if not handled properly -- peeping into a burning Atlantis. Pretty cool idea.This is a children book -- says 3+ on the back cover - or a book you would read to children. It's sort of like a National Geographic magazine covering archaeological stories, except there are more stories on mythology. The writeup isn't that technical and stories are not really long either. The art is not some major new creation but a re-interpretation of the places -- think National Geography style art.This book is recommended to parents with kids, obviously. I didn't realise this is a children book when I bought it. It's not a bad purchase but I'm not the target reader. It's still quite interesting to read.(More pictures are available on my blog. John Howe is a maker of magical worlds -- anybody who's seen his "Lord of the Rings" art knows that he's a master of elegantly detailed pictures, glowing with vibrant colors. But "Lost Worlds" is not just an art book, but a moderately exploration of "lost" places... some of which have been lost to time, and some of which technically never existed except in people's minds. And yes, the art is gorgeous.Some of these lost "worlds" did once actually exist as ancient cities and countries throughout history -- Babylon, Thebes, Troy, Timbuktu, the giant statues of Rapa Nui, Mohenjo Daro, Teotihuacan, Persepolis, the ancient site of Cahokia, Pompeii, Knossos, and perhaps the Garden of Eden (it's a bit hard to prove the specific existence of someplace with no buildings).Then there are the ones that are all about the imagination --the realms of the gods known as Asgard and Olympus, Camelot and Avalon, the sunken city of Atlantis, Ultima Thule, the seven cities of Cibola, Shambhala, Uluru, the mythical kingdom of Prester John, the realm of Faerie, and the whole legend about a Hollow Earth. I'm not sure why Ker-Ys isn't included in the mythical funfest.Some of these "lost worlds" were real (or our information of them is commonly based on something real), some of them may have been mistily attached to something real, and some are pure flights of fancy. But they do all have something in common -- John Howe explores their backstory, with archeological photographs and explorations, and historical records (such as a papal letter to King Prester John... which is a bit confusing since nobody can find his kingdom).None of it is terribly in-depth -- usually the text stretches no further than two and a half pages, and it seems aimed at younger readers sometimes. But it is highly informative and full of intriguing, and Howe seems to have done plenty of research. And his focus has a wide range, from Australia to southern Asia, the South Pacific to Egypt, the Americas to ancient Britain, Greece, and Rome. It also has a nice little foreword by Sir Ian McKellen, describing the sensations of reading this book (and reminding us, "Not that John is some conjurer of cheap tricks").And since it's John Howe, it has artwork -- rosy-hued skies, great grey-blue tsunamis and rivers, shadowy bull-monsters, warm-hued stone walls and obelisks, the bloody eruptions of fire and volcanoes, horn-headed sea serpents swimming near a misty shore, murky floating wall art, shimmering white castles, twisted trees and a "North Pole hole" that illuminates the the vast darkness of space."Lost Worlds" is a very lovely art book that also explores the origins, legends and history of all these various places -- whether they're imagined, or just lost. I mean, really lost. And the artwork simply sweeps you away.

I used this when studying the Mohenjo-Daro and Harrapan peoples, so didn't look further to examine other pages. What we read, we liked.I will certainly say that I LOVED the illustrations! ...but then that's what Mr. Howe gets paid the big bucks to do, right?!A beautiful book.

Just got a copy of this lovely hardcover art book with full colour paintings and text by John Howe. Very beautifully made, some interesting locations chosen, ranging from Camelot, Avalon, Asgard and the land of Faerie as Howe imagines it, to ancient Troy, MT. Olympus, Babylon, Knossos etc. Nothing to criticize really, for what it is it's lovely.

Various places, both legendary and historical are introduced with a double spread rollout of a painting of the place, and a descriptive paragraph. The following double spread presents more information and illustrations that fill in details about what is known or believed. Babylon, Thebes, Atlantis, Mount Olympus are some of the places the author covers. An index, a glossary and a list of other "lost worlds" is included.

I love these unique, insightful cards! I am a seasoned tarot and oracle reader, psychic, medium, etc. with experience with probably 50 decks. I was drawn to these cards because I am drawn to trees and forests. My intuition told me to buy these and I'm so glad I did. I love how they are separated into four different suits of being, healing, growth, and power. These are gentle cards that have been spot-on for me so far. The illustrations are also beautiful. Please be advised - these are oracle cards so they are not set up like tarot cards with four suits and major and minor arcana. I love the normal size of the cards and the booklet. I also love learning about the trees and how their energy can benefit me. I highly recommend these.

So the reason I gave a one star is because the one star is what it deserves. I do not want to offend anyone or makers of the cards. Art work is beautiful but thats it. There is too much on tree description and there is only one or little information on the card meaning. I like the author but this deck is disappointing.

Really lovely cards. Beautiful artwork, the only reason I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars is I wish they would have gone into more detail on the meaning of the card, but I do like that they give background information on the tree itself. Overall I am really happy with this deck.

It was not exactly what I expected. The deck is beautiful but uses the same "wisdom" that has been interpreted by other decks. I thought this deck would to into the deeper of trees themselves. In the years to come we will change and new decks will be created that goes into another level of healing, I thought this deck would be a forerunner but it is not. I have not as yet, connected with it but will when it calls to me. I wish that the back of the card did not let me know if it is reversed or right side up, but the art goes only one way so without turning over the card I know if I have reversed card, just do not know which card it is.The same interpretation generally is in all decks now. Perhaps we are not ready yet for a going beyond what has been taught up to now. I hope we will soon.

I am a tree hugger and I like Oracle cards so I thought this would be a perfect match for me. There's something about them that just doesn't click with/for me. They are pretty, however. When it comes to Oracle cards, I have to feel a connection with them or it's just not a good match.

I use these everyday. Beautiful, informative, not only intuitive , but educationally. I learn a brief item about the trees too while getting a reading too! I highly suggest these cards. Beautiful pictures, lots of symbolism too.

Really awesome oracle deck. Has larger pages with more info along with deck of cards. Very nice! Love it.

I bought these cards after seeing the Coastal Redwood card. My daughter and I took a trip to the Redwood Forest and the card illicits the same response (at least for us) as when we saw them in person. My set was missing the included pamphlet and the seller replaced the set right away.

This book was a struggle to read. There are a lot of great facts but the author obviously has some animosity against Native Americans. There is very little good to say about them in this book. I know the subject matter is supposed to be about the kid napping of Cynthia Ann so you could paint the natives as the bad guys, but the author seems to forget that the pioneers were encroaching on their lands in the first place. Also, there is very little about Cynthia Ann in this book overall. She's more of a chapter or two instead of the reason for the book. I know the facts are sketchy but this book just wasn't pleasant to read.

A great account of the Parker family in American history. Cynthia Ann was a child of 9 when kidnapped by a band of Comanche warriors who raided the Parker settlement in Texas. For the next 20+ years, Cynthia Ann lived and became a Comanche. She gave birth to her children fathered by a Comanche Chief. Her oldest son, Quanah Parker lived to be the last Chief of the Comanche people. Cynthia Ann was returned to the remaining white family members with her infant daughter. The child soon died and While still a woman of mid 30's She died as well, never able to adjust to the life of the white eyes. Quanah Parker never gave up trying to find out the fate of his mother. Raiding white settlement in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle to steal horses, cattle and kill as many whites as he could. It was the end of the era for the American Indians and their free roam of the plains. Be sure to read this and the biography of Quanah Parker. Today, in Texas, there is a town named Quanah and a Parker County in tribute to the incredible story of the Parker family.

It's a fascinating story of Texas girl captured by Indians, marrying a chief and having his children. And, as usual with these stories, she is never fully able to take up her former life when freed.

I have always been fascinated by the Comanche’s and their captives. Growing up in southwestern Oklahoma I was in the middle of their territory. The Cynthia Ann Parker story and her son Quannah are legendary.The story telling is a little dated and sometimes melodramatic at times but it is still a good read.

This book is the perfect companion to the book Empire of the Summer Moon. Cynthia was the mother of Quanah Parker, probably the most famous American Indian who ever lived. (Empire was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and I recommend reading it first)

I like the story,however ,it seems to be told from the side of the white, the Indians were fine in their own environment till the whites got greedy,but this book seems to be mostly about how awful the Indian was.

great, easy read. I had known the Cynthia Ann Parker from reading Empire of the Summer Moon. This book delves further into the personal story of Ms. Parker, and also tells of factual events in Native American history.

So well written with excellent knowledge of the history of the time, excellent knowledge of the customs and lifestyle of the Indians. The characters were so real and I enjoyed the love affair between Cynthia Ann and Nocona. I travel through Quanah, Texas at least twice a year and was so excited to find out more about that great chief. I couldn't wait to see what happened next but was sorry for the book to end.
