Against World Literature: On the Politics of Untranslatability

Review

“Just following Emily Apter’s dizzying array of texts from diverse traditions and times (including a tightly argued discussion of the philosophicality of Simone de Beauvoir, lost in translation to the best of US feminists), embracing much experimental material, all read with meticulous care, is an education. No one has thought the question of world literature in greater depth, at once re-thinking Comparative Literature as translatability studies.”—Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak“Rarely does one read a book with the title Against that is so much for important causes and ideas: writing, translation, worldliness, diversity, cosmopolitanism, while fully aware of their promises and threats. In this moment of dispossession of the Humanities, we needed just that book to clarify matters and move beyond the contradictions.”

A brilliant and timely refutation of the reductive concept of "world literature".

Considering the prevalence and continuing attention and importance of the representation of Latin American literature in translation, it is a shame that Apter does not even make a passing reference to that "republic of letters," which played an immense role in Pascale Casanova's groundbreaking book. Ultimately, the problem, which abounds in comparatists, is that knowing one more language other than English is insufficient. Read Auerbach.

This should have just been a long essay.

This cookbook literally has something for everyone! As you can see by the photos I am including -- none of this looks (or tastes!) like "diet food". So forget that this book's says "keto" on the cover. It is simply a cookbook of easy, amazingly yummy food -- from a variety of regions -- created by a reliable recipe author. If you're not keto, just add a starch and/or use regular sugar and you'll be all set.For the physical cookbook, it is a sturdy paperback, with pages of a good nice thickness making them very easy to turn. The recipes are well laid-out, clear and easy to read. The super-helpful sidebar gives you both the macro details, as well as the recipe's relevant classifications: Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Pour and Cook, Soy-Free, Vegan, Vegetarian, 5 Ingredients or Less, Under 45 Minutes. (I'll include lists below of everything in each category.)Of the 75 total recipes, 36 of them (nearly half!) are flagged as "Under 45 Minutes". And the "Total Time" listed is actually the REAL total time, helpfully accounting for the time needed to both come-to-pressure and to release-pressure. So even if you're slow in the "prep" step like I am, you'll still be able to sit down and eat within an hour for nearly half of the recipes in this cookbook. Plus, her recipes have a proven track record (through both her previous cookbook and her blog) of being both simple and delicious. So far I've made 26 of the 75 recipes that are included in this cookbook!Poblano and Cheese Frittata (pg 24), Egg Loaf (pg 26), Cauliflower Mac and Cheese (pg 28), Mexican-Style Zucchini and Poblanos (pg 30), Green Beans with Bacon (pg 34), Palak Paneer (pg 38), Chicken Tortilla Soup (pg 56), Spicy and Creamy Chicken Soup (pg 60), Sesame-Ginger Chicken (pg 72), Savory Shrimp with Tomatoes and Feta (pg 74), Shortcut Dan Dan-Style Chicken (pg 78), Now and Later Butter Chicken (pg 82), Chicken Tikka Masala (pg 90), Spicy Basil-Beef Bowls (pg 104), Stroganoff (pg 107), 3-2-2-1 Texas Chili (pg 108), Pumpkin Pie Pudding (pg 134), Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake (pg 136), Thai Coconut Pandan Custard (pg 138), Dark Chocolate Cake (pg 142), Soft- and Hard-Boiled Eggs (pg 148), Garam Masala (pg 151), Shawarma Spice Mix (pg 152), Mustard Dressing (pg 155), Easy Asian Peanut Dressing (pg 156), and Creamy Cilantro-Jalapeno Dressing (pg 157).Every one of them has received nothing but yums from the people I've shared them with.Of everything I've been able to make so far, my Top Three dinner recipes are: 3-2-2-1 and the Now, Later Butter Chicken, and Savory Shrimp with Tomatoes and Feta. The Recipe Index included in the print version makes it super-easy to look up a recipe by name (assuming you remember the name), instead of trying to find it by visually searching through the table of contents. And the regular Index is exceptional -- allowing you to easily look up recipes for a specific ingredient, or by recipe "classification" -- such as Dairy-Free, and quickly and easily get a list of every recipe that meets that criteria. (I've included a list below of each of these criteria, and the recipes that meet them.)The table of contents for the print book is as follows:Chapter 1: Keto Made Easy* Keto Basics* * Macronutrients* * Setting the Right Macros for You* * Low-Carb Food Choices* Keto Myths* Instant Pot and Keto* Instant Pot 101* Cooking from Frozen* Essential Ingredients* Instant Pot Trouble Shooting* This Book's RecipesChapter 2: Eggs and Vegetables* Broccoli, Ham, and Pepper Frittata* On-the-Go Egg Cups* Poblano and Cheese Frittata* Egg Loaf* Cauliflower Mac and Cheese* Mexican-Style Zucchini and Poblanos* Baba Ganoush* Green Beans with Bacon* Quick Indian Creamy Eggplant* Palak Paneer* Creamy Poblano Peppers and Sweet CornChapter 3: Soups* Summer Vegetable Soup* Hamburger Stew* Vietnamese Bo Kho* Sichuan Pork Soup* Chicken Curry Soup* Poblano and Chicken Soup* Hot and Sour Soup* Chicken Tortilla Soup* Creamy Chicken and Vegetable Soup* Spicy and Creamy Chicken Soup* Thai Yellow Curry Coconut Soup* Chicken and Kale Soup* Savory Chicken and Mushroom SoupChapter 4: Seafood and Poultry* Creamy Shrimp Scampi* Chinese-Style Steamed Ginger Scallion Fish* Easy Lobster Bisque* Sesame-Ginger Chicken* Savory Shrimp with Tomatoes and Feta* Chicken Bratwurst Meatballs with Cabbage* Shortcut Dan Dan-Style Chicken* West African Peanut Stew* Now and Later Butter Chicken* Sweet and Spicy Chicken Tinga* Mexican-Style Chicken with Red Salsa* Thai Green Curry* Chicken Tikka Masala* Chicken Vindaloo* Chicken SchwarmaChapter 5: Beef and Pork* Easy Taco Dip* Ground Beef Shawarma* Corned Beef and Cabbage* Ropa Vieja* Beef Curry* Spicy Basil-Beef Bowls* Stroganoff* 3-2-2-1 Texas Chili* Korean-Style Galbijjim* Carne Guisada* Braised Beef Brisket* Turkish Kebab Gyros* Bo Ssam-Style Pork* Carne Adovada* Pork Saag* Pork Carnitas* Smoky Ribs* Sausages and KaleChapter 6: Desserts* Keto Cheesecake* Pumpkin Pie Pudding* Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake* Thai Coconut Pandan Custard* Indian Zucchini Kheer* Coconut-Almond Cake* Dark Chocolate Cake* Almond-Carrot CakeChapter 7: Kitchen Staples* Soft- and Hard-Boiled Eggs* Cauliflower Rice* Ghee* Garam Masala* Shawarma Spice Mix* Best-Ever Savory Thyme Dip* Tzatziki Sauce* Mustard Dressing* Easy Asian Peanut Dressing* Creamy Cilantro-Jalapeno DressingAdditional Sections at the End:* Instant Pot FAQs* * "When should I use natural release versus quick release?"* * "Can I double the recipe, and if so, do I need to add more time?"* * "How much liquid do I need for every recipe?"* * "How full can I fill the pot? I love this authors Indian instant pot cookbook and since I follow a keto diet I was super excited to pre-order this cookbook. Sadly, I’m returning it. It does not follow the keto guidelines and the net carb counts are extremely high on many of the dishes. Sad to say, this won’t work for my needs.

OK. You’ve got your Instant Pot. Now what? The instrument panel can be somewhat intimidating, and you haven’t gone near a pressure cooker in this entire century. What to do?Enter Urvashi Pitre. Not only does she understand the Ketogenic diet, but she also knows how to translate the Instant Pot instructions into easy-to-understand recipes that will save you time, and keep you on track to stay Keto. She is a low carber herself, so you won’t find faux low carb recipes in this book. But none of that matters if the recipes don’t translate into delicious, satisfying meals. That she accomplishes in spades.Frankly, I was afraid to go near my new Instant Pot Ultra. I didn’t know what to cook, how to cook it, or even how to set the thing. Urvashi walked me through beef stroganoff, which was delicious, and then I tried her beef curry. Despite using a rather tough (and inexpensive) cut of meat, the beef was tender, and the flavor of the spices was sublime. Yesterday I made my very first corned beef and cabbage in the Instant Pot, and it was delicious. My husband said it was the best he ever had.If all the Keto Instant Pot cookbooks out there, this is by far the best.

Nothing in the description stated it was primarily Indian recipes. Those simply won't work for my family; I cook for multiple family members who have IBS.The remaining sound good, but only if I overlook that they aren't true Keto. Complete waste, returning ASAP.

I ordered the hard copy which is due out later this month and then learned that I could get the digital copy early at a discount. It arrived yesterday and I already made one of the recipes. Urvashi's recipes are almost fool-proof if you follow the directions correctly and this is coming from someone who is not a "cook" in the traditional sense of the word. This is my second cook-book by Urvashi (plus I've tried recipes from her Twosleevers.com website) and so far, everyone has been a home run. I can't wait for the hard copy to come out also! Thanks for the great recipes Urvashi, and the clear directions for those of us who don't yet cook intuitively! You definitely have a fan. The great thing about this book is the recipes don't taste "low carb" and are not just for those following a Ketogenic diet, so my "non-keto" husband has been equally pleased.

New to Keto and just the intro alone will give you a broad idea about the diet/way of eating. I have been poring over the book, will be cooking some dishes this weekend, can’t wait. This is not your simple American dump recipes. But they aren’t hard either! Very tasty. I see there are a few key ingredients and some unique ingredients. But hey I think we can all agree “diets” can be boring. This doesn’t even remind me of my goal to lose weight. I have cooked previous recipes of hers. Easy, simple and delish. You have nothing to lose and happy tastebuds to gain!

Review

To me as a life-long activist nourished on systems thinking and Buddhist teachings, this is one of the most intellectually exciting and soul stirring books I've read in years. I had the sense of drinking it, with pleasure and surprise, not having known what I d so thirsted for.By starting with questions and keeping to questions throughout, Daniel engages the reader, and by example frees her from striving for, or pretending to know, any final answers. This approach -- in itself a rare lesson in systems epistemology invites trust, openness, and a restructuring of the mind.Among the gifts for which I am especially grateful are these: Conceptual tools for perceiving and experiencing our mutual belonging, and especially what I've come to call the great reciprocity at the heart of the universe. The ways Goethe, Bortoft, Bateson, Maturana, and Varela are brought in, and key insights mediated with economy and clarity. The abundant evidence of the Great Turning, the manifold transition underway to a life-sustaining culture. And, especially valuable to those of an apocalyptic bent like myself, the 'adaptive cycle' of resilient systems, showing that at 'the edge of chaos' comes opportunity for the emergence of greater complexity and intelligence. These are but a few of the ways in which this remarkable book will enrich my thought, my teaching, and my life in this turbulent world of ours. --Joanna Macy, author of World as Lover, World as SelfThis book is a treasure for everyone who is looking for a guide to more sustainable living and a roadmap for re-designing our societies, regenerating our communities, cities and societies in harmony with natural systems and our home planet.Author Daniel Wahl has deep experience to share and his knowledge in this beautiful book will help all those aspiring to be responsible global citizens working for our common future. --Hazel Henderson, author of Ethical MarketsLife on the Planet has sustained itself for billions of years by continually regenerating itself. Our modern industrial culture has interfered with these natural processes to the point of causing massive extinctions of species and threatening our very survival. This book is a valuable contribution to the important discussion of the worldview and value system we need to redesign our businesses, economies, and technologies, in fact, our entire culture so as to make them regenerative rather than destructive. --Fritjof Capra, author of The Web of Life

In this groundbreaking book, Daniel Christian Wahl rejects our paradigmatic tendency toward quick-fix answers to our monumental crises, but instead, challenges humanity to ask the right questions, or to begin “living the questions.” (21) Wahl suggests that the urgency of the situation demands deeply considered inquiry, and a return to philosophical, ethical reflection that guides how we view our world, and act toward and within world. Our paradigmatic reaction: We don’t have time! Wahl wisely points out that we don’t have any time to waste on the same old answers that created humanity’s “terminal crisis of an outdated worldview.” (24) Instead, Wahl suggests we return to a love of wisdom and begin, through humanity’s new cosmological lens, living lives of deep inquiry toward “co-creating regenerative societies” and “collaborative cultures.”Wahl thoroughly explores his crucial inquiry, applying regenerative thinking to diverse topics such as activism, economics, innovation, and even spirituality. Four main ideas emerge from his deep analysis to challenge our outdated notions of society building, and invite us to not only survive, but thrive as a species within a multi-species planetary community: The shift from ‘sustaining innovation’ to ‘transformative innovation,’ the shift from dualistic/ either-or thinking, to systemic, complexity-based thinking and relating, The shift from the old industrial, technological model toward biologically-inspired innovation, and from large-scale agriculture and traditional economics, toward health and resilience by mimicking healthy ecosystems and creating circular economies. This book is an inspirational and necessary handbook for our age, full of novel tools and considerations essential to create a better future for all planetary beings. We must embrace regenerative culture design now and create a beautiful possibility…by “living the questions” deeply and fully, together.

A worthy read for people interested in cultivating a more beautiful world. If you like the work of Charles Eisenstein (highly recommended!) you will likely appreciate this book, too.

Beyond simply serving as an aggregate collection of current theories, leaders and projects leading the way into a deeply sustainable future, this book is inspiring and weaves a strong common thread (and economic case, among other forms of "wealth") for all disciplines and walks of life to work together, instead of competing against each other. A good read if you're looking for the next level of sustainability.

This book is about living the questions together. It brings coherence and depth into a cross-disciplinary exploration of what's possible when humans engage in regeneration of the earth and society. Inspiring, engaging, full of excellent research and articulation of what resilience is and why its important, and its an invitation to imagine thriving.

Forward thinking, mixed with inspiration and artistry. If you care about the world that we and future generations will inherit, read and regenerate.

Wonderful compendium of all the regenerative ideas and projects that I have been following for the past 35 years plus many I hadn't heard of yet. A rich book for all who want to be part of world transformation through ecological design.

a full assessment of where we need to go for future sustainability of the Earth. Should be required reading for everyone.

Did what they said they would do and what I would expect. That's the definition of good service.

I was excited to get the fantasy football black book after I saw it on twitter as I am a huge fantasy football fan. When I received my copy I started reading it and couldn't believe how many spelling and grammar errors were located throughout the book. As far as the information goes it was average at best. Do not waste your money on this book. I have never returned any book I have ever bought until this one. A complete waste of time and money. Would give 0 stars if possible.

Haven't finished reading this magazine yet and hope it does work. However, I will have to agree with a previous reviewer in that this guy needs a proof reader, especially in the first chapter. Examples: "because eve casual fans", "You're league will thank you!", "Folks want to play with ad against their friends/relatives/colleagues", "it's difficult to rebound, let alone multiple", "So, another alternative number two is to buy in bulk".Eve=even; You're= Your; Play with ad= Play with and; let alone multiple= who knows what is mean't here; another alternative two= another alternative is to.

Truly the best fantasy book out there. Have only played one fantasy season with it (baseball version), but find myself in 1st place at the writing of this review. Excited to give it a shot in football this year. To get the most value out of it, I'd recommend understanding the theories and then trying to build your own data/rankings to use in drafts. People may complain about a couple spelling/editing issues, but you really need to get past that. This is a book to teach you how to think more effectively about fantasy sports in general, not be some sort of Pulitzer Prize winning literature. Think of it more as a handbook and toolkit to apply to your fantasy football (baseball, or really any other sport) season. I will continue buying these books to read Joe's analysis on the current players, but more importantly to keep up with his views on where fantasy is headed, and updates to his theories. To sum it up, this book gives you everything you need to take on fantasy sports yourself (think teach a man to fish). To be honest, this book is not for people who want to show up to a draft with the classic magazine from Barnes & Noble. Put a little more effort than that in, read this book, understand the brilliance of Joe's system and go implement it for yourself. Thanks Joe!

A really great read and opened my eyes to drafting differently for my fantasy league.I'm really glad I saw this book on Amazon! I liked the format of book alot, as it covered different types of fantasy football leagues and how player value changes.

I do a DFS podcast, I work in the industry, I read each of the books in this series. The RPV system is not only useful for redraft leagues, it's viable for best-ball strategy. The player profiles create clear and quick context, but more than anything you find yourself drafting more logically, with clear discipline and strategy towards an advantage over league-mates.The advantage gained via this quick read is an indisputable edge. Before the season starts, read it.

Aside from several typos, this book presents a different approach to fantasy. It did really help me as it led me to make a few different picks than usual which are working out well. At (other than David Johnson getting hurt)

Worthless book. Basically tells you the concept and makes you figure the rest out

Terrible book.. looks like somebody typed a term paper.. bad layout.. was very disappointed

Michael Salla is at the forefront of Truth for our times. If released by a Government, this book might be called “Disclosure.” This book is a remarkably comprehensive summary of the essential factors driving us to understand that the history we thought we knew is false. Two exciting highlights for me were (1) the discussion that the Adamski-era contactees might have been interacting with the female German inventors of anti-gravity craft who wanted to promote a world of peace and unity (and that Adamski’s photos are similar to the Haunebu II spacecraft the Germans built); and (2) the summer 1952 fly-overs of Washington DC were Nazi UFOs that resulted in the U.S. signing a treaty with the Fourth Reich. I found the last Chapter 16 summary a masterpiece of synthesis of unwritten history of the last 100 years, and the incredible existence of multiple secret space programs. Skeptics will have difficulty attacking the details because the book not only has 584 specific references to each claim but has a masterful index permitting one to verify consistency.

I can only say, "buy and read this book sooner not later". I hate to use the word shocking because it's so over used these days but the information in this book is shocking. It answers so many questions surrounding ufos our modern history and the state of world affairs. I've just finished reading the book. I feel all of these things: betrayed, disappointed, scared, unsure, but mostly I'm mad. You see, I was born in 1948 and I've been reading ufo books since I was in junior high school. as a young msn I watched star trek and yerned for a future where mankind traveled in space and explored the universe. Now I've learned that the whole time I was waiting for the future the ruling elite of Earth have stolen that utopian future, turned it on its head and been out there my whole life, all in secret and not for the benefit of humanity at all. Meanwhile stealing our planet's resources both physical and human to serve the one percent of the one percent not just here but out there too!Now at 70 I fear for the future.

There is a lot of fact in this book, and I am going to cut to the chase by referring you to Jim Marrs' Rise of the Fourth Reich, and Hegland's Virtual Disneyland of the Gods to round out your understanding of Salla's book. Marrs will show how the Nazi group never surrendered and where they went, and Hegland will show you (Ch. 7) how they continue to acquire people and scientists to their cause. For more in-depth, for the really strong and curious, try David Paulides' Off The Grid (International section). The truth is out there, I challenge you to connect the dots... not to sell books, but the question is: Do you really want to know?

I'll give this three stars because although it's a limited hangout psy op, there is enough truth to be worth the read. Like The Most Dangerous Book in the World, it's written to mislead you but with some critical thinking you can turn the tables on the Powers That Be and separate the truths from the disinformation. Watch Salla's absurd Youtube interviews -- like with Mars 'Super-soldiers' -- and you'll know you can't really trust him, but given 'Operation High Jump' and other realities, we know that something very strange is going on in Antarctica. Read it but be careful....

This book is a must have for the once gullible couch potato, now, serious researcher who has awakened to the fact that network news is feeding you fluff, not fact.

This is a must read for anyone following the secret space program narrative or interested in Nazi weapons development.Very well researched and a good read.

The ancient history of Earth and humans, and interactions with technologically advanced extraterrestrials who were called star people and gods, is not unknown to modern humans. But the knowledge has been suppressed, and since the 1920s the technologies have been developed for imperialistic military purposes rather than humanitarian purposes. If you are new to this, then before reading this book I would recommend reading Phillip Corso’s Secret Science and Secret Space Programs. Corso’s book is more grounded in what most people might find credible, beginning with the Roswell crash of 1947. Without that foundation of knowledge of what is really going on in our world, you may find Salla’s Antarctica book incredible.Which it is — not because it is not true; but because the truth is so far different from what most people have been led to believe in.

Surpassed my hopes and expectations. I was already familiar with most of his sources. He gives a fantastic bibliography if you wish to dig deeper.I also recommend 'Selected by Extraterrestrials' by Tompkins and the work of all the other whistleblowers in this field.

It's a useful book. It is necessary for my daughter to learn the viola.

I purchased this for my daughter as required for 6th grade beginner orchestra class, she uses this book with her violin. It is of great quality, holding up to my daughters daily use and abuse. The layout of the text is easy to understand and perfect for a first timer. It was nice to have a great product for such a reasonable price.

He isn't the poet, right? Book is good, but my son hasn't dealved into it as much as I would have liked...May not be anything wrong with it, but not his cup of tea.

Exactly what was needed for music class.

This my son's book for the school band. Good quality book.

Daughter enjoys it needed to buy for her school learning to play the viola.

My son like it

This is an excellent book for learning violin

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death, by Jean-Dominique Bauby Jeremy Leggatt

From The New England Journal of Medicine

The locked-in syndrome is a complication of a cerebrovascular accident in the base of the pons. The patient is alert and fully conscious but quadriplegic, with lower-cranial-nerve palsies. Only vertical movements of the eyes and blinking are possible. At the age of 43, Jean-Dominique Bauby, who was editor of Elle and a robust bon vivant, suffered such a stroke. After 20 days in a deep coma, he gradually regained consciousness. His right eyelid was sutured shut to prevent corneal ulcerations, he was fed through a gastric tube, he drooled uncontrollably, he breathed through a tracheostomy tube, his urine drained from a catheter, and his bottom was wiped by others. He felt as if he were trapped in a diving bell, but his mind was free as a butterfly. Bauby wrote The Diving Bell and the Butterfly solely by blinking his left eye in response to the reading of an alphabet, arranged according to the frequency with which each letter occurs in French (E, S, A, R, I,... W). A friend read off the letters, pausing when Bauby blinked. Letters laboriously became words, and then sentences. I brought this book along on an airplane that took me to a meeting in a distant city. Reading it made me hope that air traffic would delay our arrival. It is a remarkable tribute to the human spirit -- a book that will inspire any physician, medical student, nurse, or patient. There is no self-pity and no thought of physician-assisted suicide. The tone is as ironic and dry as perhaps only the French can be. In a seaside hospital, Bauby, imprisoned in his paralyzed body, recounts his days. He notes that a stroke such as his is usually fatal, but "improved resuscitation techniques have prolonged and refined the agony." Now, instead of directing one of France's leading fashion magazines, he is strapped in a wheelchair, completely dependent on others for the simplest demands of life: shut the door, roll me over, fluff up a pillow. "A domestic event as commonplace as washing can trigger the most varied emotions." And then there was the boor who, with a conclusive "Good night," turned off the Bordeaux-Munich soccer game at halftime and left. Bauby's attendants dressed him not in hospital garb, but in his own clothes ("Good for the morale," according to the neurologist). Bauby comments, "If I must drool, I may as well drool on cashmere." He is, as he says, a "voiceless parrot" who has made his nest in a dead-end corridor of the neurology department. When the stretcher-bearer who returns him to his room leaves with a hearty "Bon appetit!" the effect on Bauby is the same as "saying `Merry Christmas' on August 15." Fed by two or three bags of brownish fluid instilled into a gastric tube, Bauby recalls his culinary skills -- boeuf en gelee and homemade sausage -- and melon, red fruit, and oysters, but above all, sausage. He imagines spending a day with his children, lying in bed beside his lover, and flying to Hong Kong, and he dreams that Radovan Karadzic, leader of the Bosnian Serbs, is performing a tracheotomy on him. In the Cafe de Flore, noxious gossip from the lower depths of Parisian snobbery poisons the air: "Did you know that Bauby is now a total vegetable?" Bauby, "to prove that my IQ was still higher than a turnip's," begins a remarkable correspondence, not by pen but by blinks. "The arrival of the mail [had] the character of a hushed and holy ceremony." Every sentence of this arduously written book is a jewel burnished by a rare disease and still rarer intelligence. Bauby died only two days after the publication of his book in France. Reviewed by Robert S. Schwartz, M.D. Copyright © 1998 Massachusetts Medical Society. All rights reserved. From the Inside Flap

In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young childen, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This book is a lasting testament to his life.

I chose to read this book because I was fascinated by how it was written. I thought it may be depressing and that I might not finish it. How wrong I was. Yes I was sad, after all it is a true story that I knew was not ending well. What I didn't know was how inspired I would be. It is one of the most beautiful books I have read. From the beginning I was mesmerized and I desperately wanted it to end with a miraculous recovery. It is a book that I will read again and again. Each time, I suspect, I will find something new to examine and discuss. It is a book I will often recommend.

Tears rolled down my cheeks as I finished this book, but not because of the tragedy of Bauby's illness. I was filled with gratitude for the loving gift to the world that this slim book is. It is not at all what I expected after seeing Julian Schnabel's movie. Which is not to criticize the movie, but the book itself is something very different. It is a sensitive, humorous, and beautifully written reflection that conveys Bauby's appreciation for life--before his illness and even after it. His quick and nimble mind, the butterfly, roams freely, lighting on his memories, his loves, people who touched him, evoking the preciousness of experience.

A Review of: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, by Jean-Dominique BaubyThe 8th of December 1995 began as a relatively unremarkable day for Jean-Dominique Bauby, Editor of Elle magazine in France. That evening, Jean-Dominique would endure a colossal cerebrovascular accident that would leave him with locked in syndrome, resulting in the inability to move and speak. Using a ghostwriter, Claude Mendibil, and only the blinking of his left eye, Bauby gives the reader a glimpse into his current life and thoughts as well as overlooked memories form his past. Jean-Dominique’s use of a diving bell and a butterfly encompass his take on his new life, restricted in body but free in mind to take flight to new and old places. His descriptive telling of the experiences, thoughts and memories Bauby has draws the reader in and reminds us to cherish even the most mundane of experiences. The following paragraphs will highlight some of his experiences in the chapters.Prologue: The initial introduction to Jean-Dominique’s waking life. The pain he experiences upon waking without the ability to move or sense whether he is hot or cold. It is here the reader first understands what lock in syndrome is and how while it is quite awful, he is able to escape reality by exploring in his mind and creating vivid scenes as well as re-experience memories. The Wheelchair: A number of white-coated professionals place him in a wheelchair for the first time. He still unsure exactly what his situation is and remains the same after his short lived and unceremonious wheel chair experience when he is left alone once again. This should an eye opener for all professionals that while we are busy individuals we must take time to be present with our patients.Prayer: This chapter discusses Bauby’s realization of needed to achieve smaller goals rather than grandiose plans. In his mind and prayers, he assigns each spirit a specific healing task that brings a small comfort but little reprieve. The Alphabet: Bauby uses the French alphabet ordered by frequency to communicate. He discusses the simple yet tedious way he converses with others as well as the differences in communication partners that can be both fatiguing and enjoyable.Tourists: Bauby describes the rehabilitation room, a place where individuals of various levels of ability work on their recovery. During a particular exercise, he expresses feeling like a statue in a room full of tourists, who cannot acknowledge him.Guardian Angel: Sandrine, his speech therapist and guardian angel, returned to him the ability to communicate and remain connected with others. Unfortunately, we are also told that many of his caretakers fail to use this communication mode resulting frustrating experiences. The Photo: This chapter reminisces about his last time spent with his father, one where he was the caretaker for his fail elderly father, prior to the stroke. The contrast between his positions then and now points out how fast situations can change for any one of us.Voice Offstage and My Lucky Day: Here Jean-Dominique briefly discusses his fears and discontent with medical professionals as well as his own body.Through a Glass, Darkly: It is Father’s Day, and Jean Dominique writes of the tender love of his children and they way they are have grown into personalities that are influenced by their lives.Paris: A description of his how his views and feelings towards the city of Paris, Bauby is reminded during his trips to Paris that the city has continued to bustle and time has gone on without him.The Vegetable: This chapter marks 6 months since the dramatic shift in his life; he now sends monthly letters to family and friends. He receives many in return and feels proud to be able to exert his unwillingness to be called a vegetable, if even not in his presence.Twenty to One: A now painful memory of a trip to the racetrack with an old friend, where conversation, enjoyment, food and drink resulted in the loss of opportunity to win 20:1 odds on a particular racehorse, one who’s name he struggles to remember. This chapter is full of regret of for opportunities not seized but also of opportunities he will never again experience. The Duck Hunt: The stroke left him with hearing problems that make everyday noises sometimes unbearable, in this case the incessant quacking of a nearby patient’s movement detection device. He retreats to his mind and listen to butterflies to escape the unbearable noise.Sunday: His least favourite day of the week. The hospital becomes a ghost town with only minimal staff and visitors. This day is often lonely, particularly since he is unable to adjust the television or read a book by himself. The Ladies of Hong Kong: Here he describes his mind’s travels from places he a been a number times to others like Hong Kong, where fate has always disallowed him. He also recalls a memory of a friend who was captured and held by the Hezbollah for years and ponders the fact that he now feels imprisoned much as his friend was. “A Day in the Life”: This second to last chapter is where the read will at least read about the day when his life was forever changed. His description of the day as well as the songs on the radio give the impression that he had no idea what was to come.Season of Renewal: This final chapter describes some of his progress, his joy of family time, and his acknowledgement of his new life.My only criticism is that while Jean-Dominique’s descriptions are both eloquent and vivid enough to paint a picture of his experiences, each chapter feels separate from the next, leaving the reader to try and piece together the bigger picture. This does not overly distract from the enormity of the task Bauby completed writing his memoir only blinking his left eye. Finally, any individual who works in the medical setting will find insight both into patient’s lives and how they can improve their experiences in the smallest of ways. This memoir may also benefit those who have loved ones who have experienced the devastation a stroke can cause by giving them a small glimpse into the mind of someone who is no longer able to communicate as they once were. This book also gives hope that though life may be permanently altered by terrible events, there can be renewal and new joy in the unexpected.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a must read kind of book. Its author did not write it in a conventional way. Jean-Dominique Bauby, a 43 year old French man, who was the editor chief of Elle magazine in France, wrote this book with his eyelid. He suffered a stroke that caused him to lose the ability to control or move his entire body but one eye lid. His intellect was intact, and he could hear and see well. This condition is called locked-in syndrome, because the person is literally locked inside of his own body. A French phonoaudiologist taught Bauby how to "talk" using his eye lid, so he could communicate with the health team that was trying to help him. His close friends and family also learned how to understand this new way of talking. Bauby went on to dictate this book with his eyelid while one of his therapists wrote it down on paper. It is a beautiful story of how amazing the human mind is. How hard it is to have a perfect intelligent mind imprisoned in a broken body. Above all, it teaches us a lesson of how friendship and companionship are much more important than we seem to treat it. It teaches me a lot, one of the things is not taking life for granted as something like this could happen at anytime and i wouldn't know or have any plans for it. Another one is seeing the will that man takes to survive and how strong the man is to keep pushing no matter how hard things get to me it seems like an impossible task but somehow he still does it. It's a must read book, it's very uplifting to see his spirit even tho hes been through things all of us couldn't even imagine the struggles he went through.

My son started reading this to me while I was in the hospital with a massive brain hemorrhage. Mine was luckily not in the brain stem so I do not have locked-in syndrome. At any rate, it was too soon for me, too close to the uncertainty I was facing in my own life. Now, after a year and a half, I came back to it and, luckily, I was able to read it for myself and not rely on others. The book is amazing. Bauby is a much stronger and more philosophical person than I am. He has a rich internal life that he uses to sustain himself, along with vivid memories, the love of his family, his children, and his friends. The book is not a chronological telling of a story. It is a series of thoughts and events, things that stuck in his mind, things that elucidate his condition. They are often touching, frequently depressing, but always enlightening. The book is a quick read, but not a light one.
