I bought this book recently and just finished reading it. Being new to movie making I found this book helpful to understanding the jargon of movie making; cuts; framing; and much more.This is a good basic book for those new to movie making. Well worth the price.

Gotta say, with many, many books telling you how easy it is to make a hit film it's nice to have come across and read this honest, and highly readable, approach.I liked the size, unlike several other film making guides it wasn't some 'Book of Lore' that requires lifting equipment to read. You could probably fit this in your back pocket and read it over a couple of afternoons(or nights...)It's simple, it doesn't fly away with obscure technical speech, and I liked the way when some film making process was on the verge of getting complicated, there's a breather and explanation that allows the reader to follow EVERYTHING.It actually talks about creativity and how to go about writing scripts and thinking of stories as well as how to get the most out of camera and methods and procedures of making a film. I don't think I've ever seen a book or on-line guide that merged these themes so well. Three for the price of one!!I guess the British guy who wrote this, knows what it takes to get a film started and made. OK, there's a few Britishisms, but the information is pretty universal and above all simple and helpul.Definitely good background reading to my film studies course.I feel as though I have discovered a real gem here.T.D.

Hi ,I bought this book a week ago .Iam a software engineer and i was never associated with film industry either in theory nor in practice .I actually wanted to read about scripts and i had mistakenly bought this book .To my surprise ,this book is wonderfully written .To a non-art guy like me ,it was pure bliss reading this .He starts with the most common sense issues to topics like framing ,cut ways ,editing .He touches upon each and every aspect in the making the film .No false promises ,no hypes -Just plain common sense and knowledge .The intresting aspect is that while he discusses all the technical aspects ,he does not assume the user to be film-savy guy or anything like that .Also ,there are few examples where the user can actually think of alternatives and be a active reader .The bottomline - As a non-art student ,after reading this book ,i got a different way of appreciating films !Well ,isn't it more beautiful to appreciate arts than juding it ?What are u waiting for ?Just go and grab this book !

This has got to be the first book where everything is infused witha real sense of enjoyment and fun, but at the same time combined with simple and structured learning. This book was recommended to me by a friend who holds a senior position with an institutional investor. She knows a lot about companies and a lot about corporate governance. And she's recommended some terrific books to me in the past. When she recommended this, she said it was good, if not as good as some others she's recommended to me over time.She was totally spot on. This is a good book, and yet another cautionary tale about big business breeding big egos and big, bad behavior. In other words, it's disturbing and - SPOILER ALERT - sad, because the ending is bittersweet at best.When my friend said that the book was good rather than great, I didn't probe, but in my view it doesn't rise to greatness because there are places where it's a bit slow and bogged down in details - sometimes in the cases themselves, but sometimes in more extraneous aspects, such as the attorneys' personal lives or the personal tragedies of some of Massey's victims.That said, it's well written and definitely worth reading; in fact, it's an important read. If you're interested in books about business gone bad and how the legal profession occasionally does the right thing, this is a book you should read.

A true story, been there done than. Detailed but a good read. Law suits are long and boring; but it helps to understand the details. Good read for one involved in mining, or civil litigation, or enviromental issues.Since it is true it would have been nice to have a picture of the various members of the legal team. over the read of years, you think you get to know the brave lawyers. Would be nice to see if they look as dilligent and tenacious as they seem.

"You couldn't make this stuff up." How often have you heard/read this? Mr. Leamer has written a book that proves the quote to be true. I was looking for a "white collar true crime" type book. The name Don Blankenship piqued my curiosity. He was in the news a few years ago when we all heard about the awful mine disaster in West Virginia.What a great read this book is. I realized there's more to the story (sadly) than what I saw on the news. Blankenship was evil incarnate.Money, corporate corruption, disregard for the good people of Appalachian heritage, back room legal shenanigans.... It's all here.

Laurence Leaner writes an excellent crusade of two Pittsburgh Attorneys Bruce Stanley and David Fawcett 's efforts to bring justice for Hugh Calderon. His coal mining business was destroyed by the Massey mining company and Massey CEO Don Blankinship. Fawcett and Butler efforts bring a $50 million civil tort victory for Calderon. The Massey outfit appeals. Blankenship campaigns for a conservative judge to win a judicial election and eventually overturn the civil award. The fourteen year ( 1998-2012) crusade culminates in a landmark IUS Supreme Court case decision that judges should recluse themselves from cases that a party member was a campaign contributed. These decision should stop corporations and wealthy individuals from buying favorable verdicts. An excellent well researched read.

In light of the disparities facing our nation this book is required reading. A compelling, mesmerizing, telling of the events that took place in the mines and courts of West Virginia and the advantages that those with power can employ in the pursuit of profit. Only the heroic efforts of two young lawyers stand in the way of the offending actors and their political allies in the state's highest court from achieving total domination of those struggling for economic survival.

As a resident of Charleston West Virginia I am well aware of the stanglehold Don Blankenship has on this State. Mr. Leamer, an outsider, has done what no West Virginian has ever, or will ever do: he stood up to Mr. Blankenship. Certainly not our cowed media. For that he receives my eternal gratitude. But the real heroes of this book are Mr. Fawcett and Mr. Stanley. In addition to every other aspect of West Virginia life, Mr. Blankenship has intimidated the West Virginia legal community to the point where very few attorneys will take him on. But these two had no fear. They are truly warriors. Like the attorney in A Civil Action, they are driven by a intense desire for justice. My hat is off to them both, and I wish them nothing but good fortune.

A fascinating tale of how a major corporation used all its power, including the judicial system, to ultimately frustrate the efforts of workers and their attorneys seeking what they felt was fair treatment.

Living in West Virginia and reading and hearing about the trails and woes of coal and Don Blankenship and Massey Energy made this book real. Plus I have 2 friends who know the people involved in the story. One with the lawyer Bruce Stanley and one with Darrel McGraw. This is one of the better non-fiction stories I have read since being in the Book Club at Mountaintop Public Library.

This is a simple, straight-forward introduction to using MySQL. This is the text-book my Database Design teacher uses for CSIS-1550, and it's a good, practical, no-nonsense text. The author is good about pointing out the commands, syntax and functions that vary from one SQL implementation to the next, so that it's clear to the novice reader that SQL isn't 100% uniform from one vendor to the next. I've been very disappointed by a lot of the textbooks I've had to buy for my classes, but this book isn't one of them - I feel good about recommending this book.

Bought this book for school. It was well structured, and has information for a information all lined up so you can create your own database without struggling for information to fill it up with. It's a great book. I'd definitely buy it again.

I sort of feel like I have to read too much to get to the point in this book. Over and over again I'll read a couple pages and think "I could have said that in one paragraph." Other than that, it seems to be a pretty solid book. The info is easy to understand, it gives examples and to be honest, the wordiness of it is probably something that a lot of readers would appreciate. I've had a little experience with SQL, though, so maybe that was my problem. Mind you, the experience I had was doing basic queries and basic joins. That's it.

I bought this book for a class I took. As far as textbooks go it was fine, I've certainly had worse, it presented information in an easy to understand way. I docked it one star only because it didn't have examples for all of the commands. Some operators would have detailed examples showing how to use them properly, others would just have a text description of what the operator does but not really show how to use it in a query.

This book is poorly constructed, and is a disservice to anyone that wishes to learn about MySQL. The authors appear to be more concerned with making you remember and recall the particulars of the imaginary companies (Henry Books, Premiere Products, Alexamara Marina) that they have created than actually teaching the material.The index at the back of the book is atrocious. Attempting to relocate critical information in this book is an exercise in frustration. It appears that they attempted to save paper by providing an incomplete index which is in no way representative of all of the features of MySQL.The accompanying curriculum to this book is also very poor.I ended up bringing an alternate book to class (MySQL (4th Edition) [Paperback] by Paul DuBois (Author), ISBN 0672329387) to find specific functions or reference when other students had questions that the textbook was unable to address.This book does have one positive quality. It is very light (288 pages) compared to the aforementioned comprehensive 1224 page book that I prefer. However, I ended up having to carry them both to class, making the weight savings irrelevant.

I thought this book was horrible. It's difficult to follow and doesn't really provide any useful info. I didn't use it at all for my SQL course as there are far better resources (such as the internet) than this book for helping you learn SQL.

Needed this book for a college class. Nothing really that cannot be found online, it was the in text questions that were needed to complete various assignments.

This textbook would be nice if it came with an e-reader feature. I like the option for flashcards! For the money, this was a great deal for the semester.
