I am a Harvard grad, 99% LSAT scorer (179) and professional LSAT tutor/coach since 2002.Manhattan Prep's "5 lb. Book of LSAT Practice Drills: Over 5,000 questions across 180 drills" (currently $31) is a helpful, practical, and welcome addition to the LSAT Prep pantheon, primarily because of its focus on "skill drill" over simply reading LSAT strategy guides and taking practice tests. Why I recommend this book: Instead of passively reading yet another LSAT strategy guide, the reader is forced in this book to put pen (or pencil) to paper, and to physically complete a bunch of LSAT practice assignments, which is excellent for the student who needs a little extra motivation. The authors provide a nearly endless series of drills in all the 3 main areas of the test: Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Analytical Reasoning, better known as Logic Games. With over 95 real, official LSAT PrepTests at our disposal, the last thing that LSAT prep students need are more unrealistic, synthetic practice exams from third-party LSAT prep companies (in other words, tests not written by LSAC, the author of the LSAT). The same goes for LSAT strategy guides: there are plenty of good ones already. But what most students do need is more repetitive practice at specific LSAT-based logic, critical reading, reasoning and deduction skills--and that's where this book really shines. My only objection at the moment is that there is no Kindle version of this book--as advertised, it's massive and does literally weigh 5 pounds. The LSAT is moving to a fully digital (tablet) format starting in July of 2019, so it would make sense to have a digital version of the book from a pragmatic as well as environmental perspective. For more information, google "LSAT Action Plan: How to Study and Prepare for the Law School Admission Test."

I have been using this book since earlier this year and it is really helping me. I like the diagramming tips, charts and practice drills in this book. I also use the free Khan Academy prep and Powerscore books. I like this book for its organization, charts, diagrams and practice drills, which makes for easier prep.

This book has a lot of subtlety in its organization, even with having 180 drills (180 is a perfect LSAT score). The book is seemingly endless with logic games, explained in unbelievable detail. This book will prepare you for other parts of the test, but where it really succeeds is those incredibly difficult Logic games. This book teaches them step by step, with tons of practice, to the point where you will readily recognize what's going on when taking practice tests, taking apart the logical concepts. The book also does great explaining logical reasoning and reading comprehension questions, however this resource is limited. You will get better with practice, but not far better, and I think once you're very familiar with these sections of the LSAT it's just an intelligence test. It's the Logic games (called Analytical Reasoning) that really separate the crowd, and it's that section that is learnable, where I'd encourage lots of practice.I found many of the exercises easy, then normal, then difficult. The concepts are explained from basic to complicated. If you finish the book, and I mean reading the explanations for each answer, including when you get it right, the LSAT will be much easier for you.The book is very well made, with minimal errors, clear organization, and it's pleasant to use. Because it's so large, there's no hesitation to use a pencil and go to town marking up page after page. It is a surprisingly thick book, but I actually think in this case quantity is a good quality.

This Manhatten Prep 5 lb. Book of LSAT Practice Drills is packed full of helpful exercises to train your mind to think more critically, to evaluate more precisely, all in an effort to prepare you for the law school entrance exam - the LSAT. While the book may seem overwhelming, it's a use-it-as-you-need-it book - do as much or as little as you want, all the exercises are valuable, some you'll love, others you'll hate. There are some exercises that are a little technical - the LSAT is not going to ask you which logical fallacy was violated, but knowing that these concepts exists will help you catch them when you see them in the future. I love that the book includes some exercises to improve your vocabulary - that's super important going into law school. If you can't take one of those high-priced LSAT prep courses, this book and taking some past LSAT exams with answers should go a long way in helping you prepare for the exam.

One of my biggest fears in life is getting Alzheimer's disease. I used to tutor logic, so doing a few questions a night from this collection, hopefully, will keep my brain sharper than it otherwise might be. This is not just for lsat practice. It's for anyone who likes to think!

What a great handbook for clear-thinking. LSAT prep indeed, but I wish completion was required for our mainstream news sources. Or our legislators. Again, this is a 5 pound tutorial for logical thinking (implicit in this is accurate use of the English language) and I can't recommend it enough.

“Erina Duganne brilliantly illuminates mutually constructed and intersubjective representations of race as it was - or seemed to be - embodied by black subjects in post-WWII documentary work by African American and European American photographers. This is a vivid, vital and exciting book, that opens new avenues for scholarship.” (Laura Wexler, author of Tender Violence: Domestic Visions in an Age of U.S. Imperialism, Professor of American Studies and Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies,Yale University)“In this perceptive and well-argued book, Erina Duganne offers a refreshing take on the politics of race, both cultural and personal, in American photography after World War II. With clarity and grace, it helps us to see the complex social motivations, anxieties, and biases that lie below the surface of seemingly straightforward images.” (Maurice Berger, Senior Research Scholar, University of Maryland, Baltimore County)

Erina Duganne's The Self in Black and White: Race and Subjectivity in Postwar American Photography presents a genuinely new idea and points in innovative analytical directions in a well argued, watertight end-run around post-structuralism. Although Duganne does make ample room for subjective, culturally informed reading of images, in every instance she includes the photographer as the a priori subjective producer of images to be read. Tidy, balanced, and very, very good, The Self in Black and White simultaneously rejects essentialism and limits the impact of theory-driven reading of images while revealing its author to be fearless when approaching the subject of race (or rather skin color) and photography. From chapter one, "Beyond the `Negro Point of View': The Kamoinge Workshop's `Harlem' Portfolio," Duganne thoroughly demolishes a politically explosive topic, that there can be a "Negro" (or Caucasian) "Point of View" at all, while maintaining respect for important representational concerns, both historical and philosophical, that underlay such an assertion. To limit visual understanding of an ethnic group to those who share the same line of difference is to create a photographic caste: if only African Americans can portray "black" culture accurately, it follows that only European Americans can portray "white" culture accurately. Duganne sets the stage for her integrationist approach by declaring boldly that the opposite of essentialism is unabashed subjectivity--the first person. Photographs belong to the photographer who makes them, and the creator's honesty and sincerity are far more important attributes in making and reading them than spurious objectivity.

The book is an autobiography that is more centered around Cramer's work life and career, though his personal life is touched upon from time to time (most potently when it related to his work). Mercurial would be a good way to describe it - Cramer's start that is. Growing up in Philly then going off to Harvard where he found himself doing journalism then law. Through almost a year span he was homeless, indigently sleeping in his car and barely being able to pay for tuition. Cramer got his big lift when wealthy Marty Peretz in a act of fidelity gave him $500,000 to invest. He ended up getting a huge return on the money. In a few years time, Cramer got the position as a stockbroker for Goldman Sacks. A few years later, he would depart and start his own hedge-fund with his then wife Karen - whom he met at his tenure at Goldman. This - Cramer's successful but tumultuous tenure at his hedgefund - is where the book is most focused. Cramer brings to light much of the cacophony in his life through this time period (the 1990s): his wife's retirement (big deal considering her influence), his public defamation and lawsuits from an article in 1995, his hedgefund's abominable year in 1998 - a 2% return compared to S&P's 34% - that resulted (in the worst times) in many redemptions that ultimately almost crippled the hedgefund, his side venture - TheStreet.com (online stock newsletter) and the deceit; the phonies; the scoundrels; the seamy atmosphere and hierarchical issues that saliently came along with it, its unwarranted and ominous IPO; the untenable precipice and precipitous decline. His fund bounced back fiercely the following years, vastly outperforming the market. Eventually, and impetuously, he called it quits for himself and his family.Cramer's life on Wall Street was no walk in the park. He was sedulous, waking up as early as 3am in quotidian-like fashion with minimal sleep. Everyday that was repleted with activities that started with running the hedgefund, working on his side project - TheStreet, writing many articles, and doing many on-air television appearances then [trying to] accommodate it all with family time. Part of the 'confession' was that he got so obsessed with the market that he often lost touch of higher priority (e.g. familial) things. Some examples: missed his sister's wedding (the situation was understandable though), impulsively taking a call about the market right after his child's conception, and his betrayal of his good friend Marty over a charlatan scumbag. There's two sides to every story, and even though the media may have crudely (and unfairly) portrayed Cramer as a vociferous, egotistical, charlatan - he had his side. Much was elucidated, with what I feel was with much honesty. The tone is sometimes overtly pretentious, and the text [sometimes] could be described as braggadocio but at the same time humble (e.g. his musing that went by something similar to "im such an idiot") but it doesn't take away the quality or the veracity of the book. Cramer's outspoken and confident, and the combination can falsely project conceitedness. He was very candid and delegated much of his success to those around him. I don't know how I can emphasize this more besides quoting the last words in the text "I am lucky. And it's better to be lucky than good". Take this into consideration and enjoy the book!4.3

I was recommended this book by someone who manages a solid amount of money and hates Jim Cramer. When I asked him why he hates him he said "because he is no longer the guy he used to be" and then referred me to this book.To put it simply, this book feels very....raw to say the least. Everything Cramer says is very personal, engaging and easy to sympathize with. Everything Cramer went through while running his hedge fund is covered. All the criticism and accusations he went through, the tough times when he felt stuck with low returns, the issues he faced when Long Term capital management went under etc. This book also covers a lot of other stuff like how he got started, his tumultuous relationship with his first investor, and his obsession with making the stock market a hobby/passion for the average america.Overall this book does a good job of expressing how hard working, passionate, and borderline obsessed hedge fund manager who outperform are, while showing off their vulnerable life can be outside of their secretive world

I must start by stating this book if one of the best I have recently read both from a content perspective and the way its written. In a nutshell, this book is an autobiography of Jim Cramer during the years he ran his hedge fund and co-founded the financial analysis site The [...].This book offers a lot of insight into the world of hedge fund which is mostly kept hidden. This includes both some of the trading strategies used, methods of analysis (fundamental and technical), and the politics involved. It also details how the Hedge Fund are true market makers that are able to shape the markets based on a number of maneuvers. In addition, this book offers insight into the world of financial analysis and news, as Jim talks about The [...] that he co-founded. This part of the book helps understand the .com burst and put it into context. This section also offers tremendous insight into the stock underwriting process and the associated IPOs. All that being said, it shows how trading can become a lethal addiction. An addiction in which any loss can have severe consequences for the underlying financial institution and reminds us that "you are only as good as your last trade". A thrilling, highly recommended book.

As a pure addiction memoir, "Confessions of a Street Addict" stands out from the pack. Other addiction memoirs such as Jerry Stahl's "Permanent Midnight" or Anthony Keidis' "Scar Tissue" are great reading, but become annoying in their repetition as the authors make the same mistakes over and over ad nauseum. Jim Cramer on the other hand, pushed himself to the limit, hit the wall, bounced off, and simply walked away, transmogrifying himself into something else again, a successful journalist and pundit. What makes the book so compelling is honesty, Cramer is completely open about his successes and his failures, and there are a multitude of both. One of the most remarkable aspects of "Confessions" is not James J. Cramer, but his wife Karen, known on Wall St. as the "Trading Goddess" who nimbly steps in and saves their hedge fund in a few hours when they are something like a hundred million dollars in the hole. If you are looking for stock tips, then this is the wrong book, but if you are looking for life tips, or a glimpse into another type of addiction, then "Confessions of a Street Addict" is a compulsive, in-your-face slice of the modern market.

Review

If ever there were an education in a book, there's one in this massive volume...What is most probably the commemorative par excellence of the Origin of Species sesquicentennial. (Ray Olson Booklist (starred review) 2008-12-01)Half essay collection, half encyclopedia, it's packed with everything you'll ever want or need to know about the science of evolution. (Zelda Roland Wired 2008-12-22)Broad, engaging, and useful. (Gregg Sapp Library Journal 2008-12-15)Evolution, which is slightly less than 1,000 pages long, covers almost every angle of its huge subject, from the perspective of science, religion, philosophy, and history. (Evan R. Goldstein Chronicle of Higher Education 2009-03-06)Harvard's blockbuster contribution to the Darwin anniversary is a substantial work at almost a thousand pages. (London Review of Books 2009-02-26)Evolution: The First Four Billion Years is as equally inviting and particularly timely in this bicentennial year of the birth of Charles Darwin and the ever-bubbling controversy with advocates of a creationist explanation for the mysteries of biology...The 16 explaining essays, followed by the second encyclopedic section offer the reader an easily and enjoyable access to what the fuss is all about and why it is important to get one's own opinions based on reality. Life, after all, is too important. (James Srodes Washington Times 2009-03-22)More than 100 authors contribute to the rich variety of excellent articles in this highly commendable and scholarly volume. The authors explore in detail evidence supporting the role of natural selection and other forces driving evolutionary change, and consider myriad controversies and unresolved issues in evolutionary science. Illustrative examples are drawn from all levels of life on Earth. The book critically examines distinctions between microevolution--which even religious Fundamentalists generally do not dispute--and the far more contentious macroevolution. Contributors also address the influence of evolution on philosophy, sociology, and religion and provide an excellent discussion of American antievolutionism and the ongoing controversy of teaching evolution versus intelligent design/creationism in schools. Great book on evolutionary biology.

Got this as a gift for an aspiring biologist and shed loved every page!

Good

Comprehensive and readable. This book is a great resource for those who, like me, find that evolution makes sense of the world without in any way diminishing its grandeur.

I love all the topics and authors, but many of them don't write well. Essays like these prove why a guy like Dawkins is so great -- most people can't write to save their lives. Glad I have it on my shelf because I love the title, subject, and spotted dinosaur tail on the spine, but it's mostly unread.

There's a lot here in this book's almost 1000 pages. The first 400 pages are 16 chapters (about 25 pages each) by a variety of authors. You'll see chapters on "The History of Evolutionary Thought", "Molecular Evolution", "American Antievolutionism: Retrospect and Prospect", for example. The quality and style varies somewhat: some chapters are more technical than others. You will get some overlap. It's not quite as effective as if it were all written by the same person or pair of people, but it does cover, as it needs to, a broad ground, and does so very well.Following these 16 chapters you get a 500+ page Alphabetical Guide. This covers ideas, people, nature, etc. So you get about a page and a half on Richard Dawkins, 3 1/2 pages on Stephen Jay Gould, a page on Thomas Malthus, two pages on Bishop Wilberforce, etc. Nothing, curiously, on Lysenko, although he is mentioned at a number of points in the book. There are entries on Crustacea, Insects, Homology, Natural Theology, Piltdown Man, etc. This is a fine book both for detailed reading and also for browsing as well: a good and worthy book for you library shelves!

Why they gave as much space to Creationist thinking or Intelligent Design thought is beyond comprehension. These people--Creationists and Intelligent Design people--are lunatics, crackpots, and quite possibly psychotic. There is more of substance in Judeo-Christian Scripture than the question of whether God created the Earth in 6 days.(The "Binding of Isaac", JOB, the Passion Narrative".) In fact, at this point--many Bibles discuss Hebrew cosmogony within a context of Akkadian, Greek, Hittite, Aztec, Norse cosmogony. But the review is helpful to those who wonder about the orginis of the Creatioist or Intelligent Design debate. And while they are downright psychotic, they remind us that there is a concerted effort from them to take evolution out of the High School curriculum because such discussion dismisses/diminishes the relationship between a Deity and Humanity. This book consists of a seriies of sixteen essays by different authors. And then follow almost 500 pages of encylopaedic entries about various topics on evolution and pivotal people in the development of evolutionary thought. The topic of human evolution is far more complex than man is related to chimpanzees--however true that might be. There is sense that evolution occurs as response to environmental changes. And that these evolutionary adaptations can occur in a relativley short period of time--months in the instance of finches needing to adapt beak size to help in the search for food in dry spells...There is a discussion of "Molecular Evolution" by Francisco J. Ayala, and the reader has to suspect that this is the core of the debate. This essay is followed by "Evolution of the Genome" by Brian Charlseworth and Deborah Charlseworth. And here again, the reader suspects the core of the debate. But no matter what these scholars, scientists write--and they all write with amazing clarity of expression--they cannot resolve the question of 'why' an adaptation occurs--much less the 'how' of adaptation. We know what the practical effect of transformation from Protostome to Deuterstome--but no one has stepped forward and said this is 'how' it was done--much less this is 'why' it was done. What were the steps that went from chimpanzee like creature to Ardipithecus ramidas...some 6 million years ago? Of the 'how' and 'why' of the steps from Ardipithecus ramidas to Australopithecus amamensis? And the reader suspects, that just as there is no relationship between Neanderthal and Homo sapiens--the reader also questions any relationship between chimpanzee and Ardipithecus ramidas, despite what the scientists say. And while the chromosomes / genes might be similar--and suggestive of a relationship--the 'how' and 'why' remains elusive. And we are left without recourse to a deus ex machina to explain the occurence of any creature or any physiological adaptation...but we are not left without a sense of the miraculous. That somehow, the similarities of eyes, nose, ears, teeth, gut, lungs, respiration, cellular ATP etc--all work in similar fashion from creature to creature throughout the aeons. So what we are left wtih is a sense of the miraculous. The lack of 'how' and 'why' leaves us with an appreciation for the miraculous. We do not attend worhsip services for science, or 'proof' of God. We attend to 'praise God from whom all blessings flow." We attend to re-affirm that act of Faith, we attend to thank a Deity for what we have received or are about to receive, we attend to bewail our manifold sins, we attend to re-assert existential control over our existence so that we end up somewhere between God and the Angels and not to descend to animal existence. A descent seen all too readily as in the case of Nazi atrocities that reduced humans to subhuman in order to justify cold-blooded, gruesome, purposeful extermination in the millions. So need for that sense of the Divine is not easily or readily dismissed. And anyone who thought about science, recognizes the role, the place of the miraculous where the 'how' and 'why' are unananswered yet respected. So the reader studies these essays for the science revealed, for the scientific processes the various authors write of. The topic is incredibly complex and demanding intellectually. This should be one of several readily availble to the homeowner. While the topics are arcane, and challenging, the book is readable in small doses.

I came across this book recently by accident in the bookstore and was both surprised and very impressed at its coverage. Not only is this book a wonderful encyclopedia of both historical and current thinking in evolutionary biology, but it accomplishes this great depth and breadth in a single large but inexpensive volume. If you can only afford a small handful of books on life science, I suggest this should be one of them. Intended for the science educated but not neccessarily biological specialist reader. There are essays on concepts, controversies, applications, implications, links to other fields of science, links with the humanities and culture, just about everything that makes evolution such a dynamic and interesting field of study.

Introduction From the second century on Christians have expressed the biblical faith in summaries that served to identify the church's public message. The Greek word symbol--a technical word for creed--identified the function of such summaries of the church's teaching as its identifying statement of belief, purpose, and mission. The Apostles' and Nicene Creeds both offered believers guidance for public instruction and witness and also served to regulate and evaluate the public theology of the church's teachers. They demarcated lines between errors that had attacked the faith and biblical truth. When Emperor Charles V called upon the Lutheran princes and municipal governments to identify their public teaching in 1530 at the Diet of Augsburg, the Wittenberg theologians and their associates from other territories, under the leadership of Martin Luther's colleague, Philip Melanchthon, composed what they called a confession of the faith (after considering the label defense [apology]). That document, the Augsburg Confession, became recognized as the public symbol of the Evangelical Lutheran movement. It became the legal definition on which the political toleration of its adherents was based through the religious Peace of Augsburg of 1555. By 1555 the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, and Luther's Catechisms were also being used alongside the Augsburg Confession to describe and define what the Wittenberg reformers intended as reform and thus to regulate ecclesiastical life in various territories that had accepted the Reformation. The doctrinal controversies of the 1550s and 1560s necessitated further definition of public teaching, however, in the view of many Lutheran governments. Some of them sponsored the composition of additional confessions of faith, while others assembled confessional documents in collections called a corpus doctrinae (body of teaching). Melanchthon and other Wittenberg theologians had first used the term corpus doctrinae for the fundamental summary of the Christian faith, a term akin to analogy of faith. Later the term designated documents that could help determine the elements of the analogy of faith, and from 1560 it was employed to entitle a formal collection of such documents. In that year a printer in Leipzig, Ernst Vgelin, published a collection of the ancient creeds and eleven confessions and theological treatises from Melanchthon's pen as the Corpus doctrinae Philippicum. That collection became the legal definition of the faith in electoral Saxony in 1566 and in other lands at about the same time. Similar corpora doctrinae were published in a number of other principalities in the 1560s; they usually included Luther's Smalcald Articles and Catechisms as well as the Augsburg Confession and its Apology, along with one or more other local confessional documents. Two corpora assembled by Martin Chemnitz in 1576, for the principalities of Braunschweig-Lneburg and Braunschweig-Wolfenbttel, provided a model for the Formula of Concord. The authors of the Formula of Concord responded to objections from followers of Melanchthon who treasured the Corpus doctrinae Philippicum, and therefore they did not use the term corpus doctrinae when they prepared the Formula for publication with the ancient creeds of the church, the Augsburg Confession and its Apology, and Luther's Smalcald Articles and Catechisms after the completion of the Formula of 1577. One of the leading figures in its composition, Jakob Andreae of the University of Tbingen, was commissioned to compose a preface for this collection of documents that would speak for the princes who had sponsored the drive for Lutheran reconciliation and unity which the Formula had climaxed. In it he sketched the history of the conflicts over the interpretation of Luther's teaching. Andreae's efforts included tireless travels and diplomatic negotiations that finally brought Elector Ludwig of the Palatinate into concert with the other two leading Evangelical princes of the German Empire, the electors of Saxony and Brandenburg, August and Joachim II. These three, joined by eighty other princely and municipal governments, led 8,188 theologians into subscription of the Formula of Concord by 1580, and the Formula and other confessions were published as the Book of Concord on the fiftieth anniversary of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession, on 25 June 1580. The Book of Concord received criticism from certain quarters, particularly the followers of Matthias Flacius Illyricus regarding the doctrine of original sin expressed in the Formula, and from those whose spiritualizing view of the real presence of Christ's body and blood in the Lord's Supper led them to reject the Formula's sacramental theology and its Christology. Nonetheless, some two-thirds of German Protestants found in the Book of Concord an authoritative expression of their faith and a hermeneutical basis for interpreting scripture

After having a chance to read more of this new translation of the Book of Concord, I still conclude that this book is--overall--very good. Yes, the translation does pluralize some areas where the original was singular, such as Luther's explanation of the Ten Commandments in his Small Catechism. Nevertheless, such pluralizations seem natural to the modern ear and tongue and do not seem a deliberate ruse to avoid using "he, him, or his," such as the explanation of who is my neighbor. The translators and editors should not have allowed these subject-verb-predicate mismatches, but were probably allowed for political correctness. However, other areas are deliberately so worded for modern correctness, such as portion of the Smalcald Articles where the translators change singulars to plurals to avoid reference to male clergy. Translators are not to make something likeable to the modern reader but make it understandable. So my first impressions were off a bit, but not much on pluralizations for political correctness. The references and historical background in the footnotes are superb and bests any BOC yet to come to print. This alone makes the book worth its purchase--so much so students of the Confessions should have this volume and use it! It was especially refreshing to see incorrect references in previous Book of Concord editions corrected in this edition. The biggest possible "problem" with this BOC is its use of Melanchthon's second Latin version of the Apology as the basis for the translation. Kolb and Wengert do make a serious case for their decision, much of which has merit. I do not have the historical or theological qualifications, however, to say definitively if using Melanchton's second Latin version was the best choice or not, but readers should be aware of this decision. In short, this edition does have some shortcomings of which readers should be aware. However, it is the most readable BOC to date and has the best footnotes of any BOC, bar none. Thus, if you want to read the Lutheran Confessions, then buy this edition and read it. However, for serious study, cross-refer this edition with the Concordia Triglotta to hone in on the original authors' intents.

I am getting quite a library started which yields a lot of information for me to study being a newcomer to the Lutheran Faith. This book is fascinating to read because it goes back to the beginning of the Reformation.

A wonderful compendium of the foundations of Lutheran theology.

Lot of reading, needed for a course, good translation.

this is a great product!

While there are a few translations of the Book of Concord around, this one does well as an alternative to Tappert's translation or the overly-cumbersome Triglotta. This translation is easy to read and the explanatory notes are well written and easy to comprehend. This is as good a translation for laymen as Tappert, and good value for money as well.

I recently joined a Lutheran (LCMS) church after becoming dissatisfied with the lack of clear doctrine in my old church. I read most of this book to familiarize myself with Lutheran doctrine prior to joining the new church. This book provides a very solid doctrinal foundation and provides insight into the foundational principles of the Lutheran church. It also provides insight into the problems in the Roman Catholic church in the 1500s.This is not for a casual reader. It is a challenging read and requires that you pay attention to the arguments being developed. But I found that it was worth the effort. My faith was strengthened by the clear defense of foundational principles (e.g. justification by grace through faith on account of Christ). While I recommended Luther's Small Catechism with explanations to all Christians, I can only recommend this to Christians ready to put in the effort to deepen their understanding of the foundational principles of the faith. Much more challenging than the typical Christian bookstore fare, but also more rewarding.

Before you go to your pastor with questions, have this handy. If you study this half as much as you study your Bible, you are on your way to being an educated disciple.

A very intimate look into a world completely forbidden to non-Jews, it was something about which I always wondered. I'm grateful to Ms. Sahm for allowing me to go where no Christian has gone before, and I certainly don't mean for this to be disrespectful. Judaism is filled with wonderful rites and rituals, something I feel is missing somewhat in the Roman Catholic Church. Maybe not so much missing, as not followed, sadly. The Catholic Church has given up so many rituals, where the Jewish religion clings to theirs and pushes its followers to continue with the old ways, in the home and the synagogue. I'm glad I bought this book.

For a non-Jew interested in Orthodox Judaism, this is a good book to read. I once worked in a location where many of my customers were Orthodox Jews, and ever since then, I have been interested in their way of life. For a non-Jew not well-versed in the Old Testament, some of the information might be a little hard to understand, but anyone acquainted enough to know their way around the first five books should not have trouble. I found it quite interesting and thought-provoking, though I don't think I am part of the audience the author had in mind.

If you are looking or just searching for that just right Jewish book to fill a void this is it.I would buy this book for others and it is a nice work in my Jewish collection.

As a convert to Judaism, I am in search of good reading about the mikveh. Because most of the available material is written from a very Orthodox perspective, I was excited to find this book, which appeared at first glance to be a collection of personal experiences and stories about the mikveh. After having finished the book however, I am completely confused as to what the author's intentions in writing it were. In the first chapter, the author presents her personal experiences of immersing in a mikveh (all two of them). On her second immersion, she claims to have had some sort of extra-normal experience, which, she claims, drew her back to the mikveh to study it and try to understand why it made her feel the way it did. The rest of the book is spent alternatively describing conversations with mikveh personnel at the ONE mikveh she studied for this work (which, incidentally is the mikveh at which she had her two immersion experiences), and in diatribes about how de-humanizing the concepts of mikveh and family purity are. She claims to have developed personal relationships with the mikveh personnel, but consistently portrays them in a bad light to the readers. She never gets back to answering her question of why her mikveh experience was important to her, and, what's more, refuses to every immerse again! Her work is unenlightening and gave me no great insight into mikveh. The book was very disjointed and completely without scholarly merit. In addition, she appears to have failed to do any research into the topics she discusses, relying upon the words of the mikveh personnel as her primary sources. The one upside of the book was in the afterword, where the author describes two modern mikvaot (one in Boston and one in Israel) that are certified kosher and cater to non-traditional crowds (eg. single women, the non-Orthodox, and homosexuals).Overall, this book was a disappointment.
