Ulises Fariñas is a Brooklyn-based writer, cartoonist, and illustrator who meticulously blends genres, styles, and universes. He is the artist and co-writer of Gamma, a one-shot comic serialized in Dark Horse Presents, and the writer of the pulp-throwback anthology Amazing Forest. He also is the artist of Judge Dredd: Mega-City Two written by Douglas Wolk.Erick Freitas is a gut-punching, nosebreaking, nostalgia-cracking writer, creator, and producer from Elizabeth, New Jersey. He’s writing/producing Man with a Gun, a short film scheduled for release in 2016. His words and thoughts can also be seen in the pulp anthology series Amazing Forest. To goofy to be serious not goffy enough to be entertaining
This book collects the first four issues of the series (or mini-series) of the same name, along with Annual #1.I read the first episode of Judge Dredd in the first issue of the 2000AD comic back in the bronze age (for that is where American comics were at the time). I was not impressed with it, as it seemed to have all the charisma of British kids’ comics of my childhood (in the 1960s) in an age when American comics had grown up from their Silver Age straightjackets (thanks to Stan Lee).There were a lot of ‘serious’ action/adventure/SF/horror strips from the old British comics that could give the Americans a run for their money, but 2000AD seemed to have got all the violence (and imagination, to be fair about this), but the characters were still – if not more – as one dimensional as their forebears in the 60s. I didn’t bother with the subsequent issues, which made no difference to the popularity of the comic, and it appears to be still going in one format or another.Judge Dredd was the breakout star of the comic, as were a vast number of the writers, who went on to give the American comics a shock over the years.IDW has been publishing a licensed Judge Dredd title for some time – with 13 volumes listed inside the cover of this one – some of which I have read, and “Year One†got a 5-star review from me, though most of the others were 3-star reviews.This volume, however, is not even as good enough to get 3 stars from me, due to the poor writing: it is written as if it was a “B†movie script, which might work if it were actually a film, but doesn’t as a comic. This is a common fault with ‘amateur’ comic book writers – who might actually be professional writers in other genres.The story has too many cuts from one scene to another without filling in the events in-between; the most noticeable being one where Dredd and associates have just fought off some baddies, who are driving away into the distance, when suddenly Dredd is at the controls of a train and drives it in front of the fleeing baddies, without any explanation of how he got there, or how the baddies didn’t see the train coming.This sort of stuff works in a film because the film is moving quickly and you – the viewer – doesn’t have time to think about the logic and flow of the scene, whereas in a comic book, you are reading at your own speed, and can stop and say “hang on a minuteâ€â€¦Another annoying point is that Dredd is wandering about with a long grey beard – intended to show that he is very old in this ‘future shock’ story. However, he is also very insistent on Judges maintaining standards, in which case, why is he sporting an untidy beard? I don’t remember Clint Eastwood sporting a beard, even in his later westerns, and even in the Leone ones it was still more of a stubble.All in all, this feels like an imitation of a Verhoeven film from the 70s or 80s, but not as good as his – more like one of the cheap sequels.
