Review

“…a compendium of useful information about the disorder and how to best manage it. Drawing on what worked for her, and based on researching expert advice, chapters contain a summary of useful tips and key points to remember. The result is educational and inspirational.” --Dan Kalb, PhD, Psychologist, OCD specialist"It wasn't until her future husband heard a public service announcement on NPR describing OCD that Pagacz was able to put a name to her condition. After 20 years of rechecking locked doors, straightening computer cords, redoing school projects, and hearing threatening voices, Pagacz finally gets treatment. Her description of her escalating illness is irreverent, brutally honest, and compelling. With the help of her doctor, she is able to gradually control her obsessive thought and compulsive acts using strategies that included observing her actions and facing down "Monkey," her mental tormentor. While triggers remain just below the surface, and Pagacz admits to relapses in stressful times, such as her wedding and starting her own business, her successes are inspiring. Excerpts from her poetry as well as thought-provoking quotes are scattered throughout the book, and important information is recapped in "Key Points to Remember" sidebars. Teens struggling with OCD will be encouraged by Pagacz's accessible story. And although there are no cures for quick fixes for the condition, according to Pagacz, her practical strategies offer hope to others facing similar struggles." --Candace Smith, Booklist, September 1, 2016

In this unflinching account of the devastation that OCD can wreak on sufferers, Pagacz describes the exhausting years spent as a slave to a demented and demanding master and subsequent hard-fought battle to wriggle out from under her obsessions and compulsions. Along the way there are inspirational quotes, humorous asides, notes of encouragement and joyous and apt illustrations and ephemera that serves as a code-breaker to deactivate the OCD alarm system. If you suffer from OCD or want to learn more about the condition from someone who has broke through to better, healthier living, this is worth picking up.

Kirsten Pagacz's book is an amazing read into OCD related possibilities. If you don't know about OCD, you'll have an inside view and understandingof the suffering and internal struggle and havoc it can rain on a life. Some books delve into the outwardly observable symptoms of disorders. This book takes you inside the experience like none I've ever read before. If you know about OCD already or are dealing with it personally or throughothers, you will relate to Kirsten's story telling. The book is humorous at times, painful at others, but more importantly the stories will provide you withan internal voice that there is a way out.The fact that Kirsten gained the upper hand over this will inspire hopeif you need it. You may also be better able to better understand and helpsomeone in need. What really impressed me about Kirsten is her ability and desire to reacha hand back to help others. She is joining with the medical community viathis book and her continued work with the OCD community. OCD is a verylimiting disorder. Kirsten's book and work offers some keys to reopenthe door to life's possibilities. If you have a chance to see her speak or visit her work, it will be worth the effort. She has more stories to tell and I expect another book from her in the future.

My husband and I both read this book. Myself to encourage and prove that a life free from OCD exists and my husband to understand the grips OCD has on the woman he loves. Even if you have OCD and live with it on a daily basis it can still be hard to explain and harder for others without OCD to understand.Kirsten found a way to connect with both of us. To encourage me and explain while providing insight to him.Kirsten's book made me a believer that others with OCD know exactly the feelings I have at times, that we've all been there and that believing in yourself and challenging yourself even when you think you can't will break the vicious cycle that is OCD.Kirsten Pagacz book proves that overcoming OCD is a possibility and that a life free from OCD exists.

The minute I started this book, I was suck into a world I had no idea existed. There are excruciating yet intriguing accounts of struggles with not only internal afflictions, but also external conflicts. Kirsten Pagacz writes a compelling account of her experiences with a hitherto misunderstood, debilitating disorder. She grapples from chapter to chapter trying to understand the deep, internal issues that set up imagined roadblocks and frequently interfere with her life. Yet through herculean effort to understand this disorder, she conquers the roadblocks with a courage that shines through like a glimmering light at the end of a very long tunnel. This is a truly inspirational book. We all can find something in it that we may identify as the common struggle with our own inner demons. I myself can apply the lessons in this book to my perceived mental roadblocks and find a path to a more rewarding life.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. The author explains her battle with OCD and how she learned to gain control over her life. She has a sense of humor that makes this book easy to read, while being informative. The steps she used to recovery can be used by anyone dealing with any life struggles.

A personal, very helpful reflection of one person's journey through OCD and taking control of her life. Very well reviewed by professionals and extremely helpful. If YOU have anyone suffering with OCD, this is the best, most vulnerable, guide to seeing it from the inside of a successful business person's life. A NEEDED guide/memoir/reference book.

This book not only informs its readers of the effects of OCD but also focuses on the hopeful (yet hard) path to recovery. Kirsten's story is so powerful and getting to know her through her past, present and future self really opens your eyes to the world of OCD suffering. By the end of the book I feel a huge sense of pride, that this OCD beast wasn't able to defeat her. What a strong, amazing woman with a story that can help others overcome their OCD struggles and provide inspiration to those of us who are fortunate enough not to struggle with mental illness. I'm very glad I bought and read this book.

Leaving the OCD Circus not only made clear to me how devastating OCD can be but how extreme and interconnected with other mental tricks we play on ourselves. I wish I had been able to read it sooner, it would have been a great help to some relatives. This is not a "text" book, it is an easy and sometimes entertaining book. Highly recommended.
