Adding to the 2006 edition "more than 2,000 new and updated illustrations," the latest iteration of Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary is a wonder to behold. Divided into 18 "themes " including astronomy, clothing, society, earth, and animals this reference volume offers crisp, clear illustrations for each of its entries (and component parts), enabling readers to envisage cutaways of detail-intensive things like jet engines, toilets, synagogues, and honeybees, as well as more abstract topics, such as painting techniques, museums, and musical notation. While spatial limitations dictate the guide be less than exhaustive (furniture gets just a handful of pages), Corbeil and company do a remarkable job in terms of breadth and editing, interweaving bar code readers and URLs, as well as a quick study of roofs and a litany of coffee makers all without overwhelming readers or leaving them feeling cheated. This book earned 5 stars because the quality of the information and the presentation of the material exceeded my expectations. I had looked through the book briefly at a book store before making the purchase, so I was aware of what it consisted of. However, I was still surprised by how conclusive and detailed the book is.The artwork in the book is clear and detailed. The book is quite hefty, but you should be able to take it with you just about anywhere. It could fit easily into a backpack without feeling awkward.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves words and their meanings and has a mind for minutiae.
As a retired old guy, this is what I need to refresh my memory for common things long forgotten. It's embarrassing to struggle to find common words in conversation, but this is a real help to re-establish memories of words to things I learned 40 or 50 years ago, but haven't referenced during my working life. This book really has driven home the fact I, old person, needs to re-educate myself.
This is a great book either for an adult or for a kid who likes to learn. Items in the book are very well illustrated and are separated by topic. The images used are then labeled and broken down with definitions given for each of the parts. This book is a lot of fun. My only suggestion is that if you are in need of an actual dictionary, I would recommend just getting one, as this book can be challenging to find the word you might be looking for, plus, it does not seem to have many difficult words.

This Visual Dictionary is perfect for people learning English. I have a community conversational English class and each of my students ordered a book to help them better understand specific details. One student used information contained to help him obtain a job, another used it when taking their vehicle to be repaired. It has been very useful for teaching many topics.
I love taking this guy off the shelf and opening a random page. The illustrations are gorgeous, the descriptions concise and helpful, and the content is up-to-date. It's good value for money, too, and the kind of thing you can't easily get from a web search. English is my second language, but even native speakers may find this helpful for the occasional "what is that thingamajig called again?" question, or simply to take a closer look at how the world works. Highly recommended.
My husband had a brain infection and is having trouble with remembering names of things. This has been great. The descriptions and colorful pictures make this a great book.
I was looking for a good Picture dictionary to help me to improve my English vocabulary. And I bought this book and is very happy. I use this book very often even sometimes I browse the pages and read the descriptions as if it were a some fun novel.I wouldn't suggest the book for starter. For example if somebody want to know what is a "cloud". The subject "cloud" takes a whole page on this book and explains dozens of different types of clouds. Also because of the size (pretty heavy) it is not for people who travel.
