Lots of changes in this one. Ash and Ted are married when he receives unexpected news after they return. He had a child given up for adoption and reconnects with a Jewish professor at NYU he had a one night stand with. Nelda is helping Steve raise Miranda and Steve makes a love connection with an old friend of both his and Marie's. Pam has doubts about her relationship with Dave the grocer and get news of a lawsuit against Jack's estate by a secretary at the exchange who committed suicide. The family has no case, but are seeing if they can force Pam to a payoff to protect Jack's name. The first traumatic major holiday since Jack's death causes her children to splinter from her. She finally has to make a threat to cut off their funds to get them to treat her with respect. They are both whiny brats. Sandra has regretted her behavior with Jack, but a sincere apology finally wipes the slate clean for Pam. They make a visit to an apartment that lease needed renewing and found out just how sick Jack was and met another girlfriend. They are both independent women who did not make friends easily and despite their lack of things in common, combine forces to deal with the new threats. Sandra decides not to sell the business because she enjoys running it and Pam needs the freedom of the income without the responsibility of the business.Tragedy strikes Miranda again and Sandra's involvement in her life helps her get past the horror of not being able to have children of her own. Steve's new relationship is almost through raising her own kids. After being dumped for a younger women, Carolyn has to force her kids to quit playing one Mom against the other. Her ex finds the harder body woman is not making up for his aging and is grass is not greener on the other side of the fence. Pam meets Dan, a body builder lawyer recommended to her by her neighbor. He really revs her engine and she decides that maybe she is ready for a relationship.Ted and Ashton grow to like their extended family although Ted thinks the one big happy family thing is a bit weird. He does like getting to know his daughter. Steve's panic at having to raise Miranda alone put him in the path of a semi and Sandra and Tom get a chance to raise a child of their own. Pam and Sandra form a lasting partnership to raise Miranda and deal with everything that comes ahead of them. On a surprise trip to Costco, Ash is shopping with his husband's child's mother when he sees Pam and who he guesses to be Sandra. He assumes the baby is Jack's and when Pam gives him the cold shoulder, He vent more than 30 years of jealousy at Pam. He tells Sandra how Jack only loved him and Sandra and how he was leaving Pam. This immediately dissolves the new happy family he was forming with Ted and changes how everyone see Ash. The kids come home, Dan moves in and trouble starts. Jack's son proves to be a chip off the old block as you see the patterns reform in the same horrible way. Now she has a daughter in love with a former priest and pregnant and a son repeating his father's choices of marrying a women who he doesn't love and engaging in risky behaviors with no desire to be faithful to one partner. Although it doesn't excuse his behavior, Jack had sexual abuse to mitigate his. His son does not see anything wrong with his behavior either.Why do I like this series when it may sound like a bad episode of Dynasty complete with shoulder pads? It is gritty and does not just use over the top behavior, but really mean, manipulative bulls*** that all human beings pull on each other. These people are very short of impulse control and do not let love get in the way of their own self interest. That is why I bought them all and losing sleep reading them back to back.

The entire series, Pam of Babylon, is a dark, well written, compelling look into a twisted relationship in a contemporary setting. This is book #5, as much depends on knowing the characters and the story, it probably does not stand well on it's own as a solo read, but as part of the series it absolutely shines as the next segment of the ongoing saga of the life of Pam of Babylon.When I picked up book #1, it was some pretty rugged subject matter. Though a novel, it is no light fiction. The author has done a masterful and truly insightful job of developing her characters, exploring a very complex relationship matrix involving many main characters and how they influence and interact around the primary character of the book who is dead from the beginning of the story. Through all follows, you learn much of Jack, while watching the depth charges of his behaviors detonate deeper and deeper in the lives of his wife, children, mother, brother and his family, mistress, various lovers and those whom he used and abused when he was alive. It is one of the most remarkable series of books that I have read in my life, but it is not always comfortable, in fact frequently not, which is where the brilliance of this author really shines - she makes it possible to take this painful journey anyway, and I have learned a lot through reading her insightful narrative and observing her penetrating development of characters and their amazing interactions. I cannot recommend this series highly enough. But start with book #1. {Smile}

More loss for Pam, but she finally allows herself to feel love and asked Dan to move in.Pam’s mom, Nelda, keeps her promise to Marie and helps Steve take care of little Miranda. But when Nelda has a fall, Steve panics and does the unthinkable. His lack of commitment & direction leads to tragedy.Sandra & Tom are trying to make it work.Ashton, another one of Jack’s lovers, is a real piece of work. His jealousy of Pam is maniacal and scary. Even crazier is his obsession with Ted’s ex, Natalie & her daughter, Deborah. They should keep an eye on him.

Pam Smith is getting over the death of her unfaithful husband, Jack. Evidently he had HIV and infected her, his lover, Sandra, Pam's sister, Marie and Cindy. Pam was a caretaker child in her family, trying to help her Dad and little sister, Marie, survive her mother, Nelda's, alcoholism. Marie, recently died from HIV and Pam is protecting herself from cartaking for her niece, Miranda, Marie's daughter. Nelda is helping Steve, her son-in-law, with his daughter to make up for not taking care of Marie as a child.Ashton Hageman-Dale and Ted Dale are married and Ashton has a picture of Jack Smith in a collage in the foyer of their house.
